Well... I went and did it
That's right. I just finalized my travels plans to relocate and I will arrive in St Thomas next Wednesday the 15th. I'm still absorbing the fact that I've done this. I'm excited and scared at the same time (as I'm sure at least some have been who've already done this). Much love and thanks go out to this message board community. It has been one of the most informative outlets for the relocation process. That and the settlers handbook. i have one more request of you guys. If anyone should hear of any landscaping/grounds maintenance jobs available (whether they be resorts or private companies) in the coming week I would be immensely happy if you could pass the info along to me. I will also be looking into kitchen work, but i know there are probably so many possibilities there that it would just be a matter of picking up the paper and finding out for myself. I would like to work on St. John, but i can and will work on St. Thomas as I am guessing that the most jobs are there.
As I've said.. much love and thanks to all of you (especially you Islander). I hope to meet all of you eventually when i arrive. When I'm settled I'd love to have a drink with all of you... and the first round is on me. : )

Hello Dave,
For landscape work - check out the large resorts, unless you are a higher up - manager - the money is not very good for the ordinary grounds people in terms of the hard work. There is like the Plant Depot which sells plants and Bryans Plants ... you could look there - but both are family or partner run businesses, but still you might be able to get something there at the nursery or maybe on their landscaping teams when they get jobs to do a yard ect. So this is something you can look into just as well as the resturants. There are some people who started their own landscaping business after working for a nursery for example and they keep maybe 10 or so regular clients so are able to sustain themselves with a fix monthly maintenance fee for X number of days and additional charges for fertilizer, replacement plants, spraying ect.
First thing you need to do is get your health card so you are ready to work in resturants... you need to have it.
All the best Dave!! and you are welcome, glad the site and board were of help to you. Definately keep us posted on how things are going one you get there.
And yes - most folks report being scared, nervous, excited ect. 🙂

Islander,
Thanks for the input. I'll be in touch as soon as I settle. I can get the food service card on St. Thomas at the hospital, right? I'll be getting that as soon as i get there.
~Dave.
People who plan to work in food/drink service need health cards. Health cards are issued at the Community Health Clinic. On St. Thomas the clinic is located in the Roy Schneider Hospital, second floor. The cost is $46.60. Requirements are a photo ID, pictures, a social security card and you are required to take a stool test. For more information call the Clinic at (340)774-7477.
