Weird prices

There are certain things on island that are priced strangely.

I needed some new bed sheets. A queen size fitted sheet, to be specific.

$24.99 at K-Mart. That's just the fitted sheet, not the "sheet set."

Have I been here too long to remember what linens cost stateside?

It's become my new unit of measurement for anything.

"Hey, how much was your power bill this month?"

"Steep. Eight bedsheets!"

Hi Rich,

Sheet ARE expensive here, as opposed to stateside prices -- and not very good quality either.

I purchased some sheet sets at PriceSmart a few months that were reasonably priced (even though I can't recall the exact price). The quality was not all that great, but they are adequate for now.

That said, linens are definitely on my list of things to bring back from my next trip to the states. I am finding that there are a number of things that are not worth lugging back from the mainland, but linens -- YES.

QVC will ship to STX and sell sheet sets at a reasonable price, especially if you happen to catch them when they are the "Today's Special Value". Purchase one of their "Northern Nights" high thread-count sets and you won't be sorry!

Domestications.com will also ship to the USVI, and offer a wide variety of household goods that give you many, many more options than ol' Martha's overpriced, one style, take it or leave it "choice". After growing sick of shredding the stretchy part of yet another $45 king MS mattress pad in no time at all, we recently ordered three high quality (e.g. thick, durable material for the fitted section of the pad) for $6 less each than the one KMart variety we can get on island. We also found genuine 100% latex foam king pillows for $40 each, impossible to get on island -- or in many other places -- that last years longer than the one cheesy fiberfill king pillow from Martha. (Last king latex pillows I saw retailed for $95 each).

Not everything from Domestications.com is a better deal than KMart (e.g. basic curtain rods, rattan shades) but it's always worth checking out. They also offer a Buyer's Club that's worth 10% off of every order -- it's $25/year and can quickly pay for itself and then some.

Greetings from the Mainland :)!

Price report on bedsheets in the Mid-Atlantic:

T.J. Maxx & Marshalls:

Good: King Sheet "set" (1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, 2 pillowcases) 300 Thread Count $29.99

Better: King Sheet set (with "extra deep" fitted sheet) 320 Thread Count with detailing (woven embroidery, fancy edging, etc.,etc.) $39.99

Best: King Sheet set (extra deep fitted sheet) 600 Thread Count $49.99

Just to give you a little perspective on the price of linens on STT, Rich :)!

600 thread count sheets sound fabulously decadent!

Moving down to STT in a few weeks, and after having first read this thread, went on a sheet buying frenzy! Which is kinda hard to do, considering I don't have a bed there yet, but why should that stop me from shopping?!
Soooo, it's full/queen flat sheets for me for now!
Mell - have you seen the Ralph Lauren queen flats at TJs/Marshalls?? $9.99 for 450 thread count, $8.99 for 350! Now, if I could only find towels there that I like!
Any other items with weird/disproportional prices on STT? Any excuse to shop, LOL!
Cheers, all!

and almost fainted.

Nordstrom Rack was beautiful (all those shoes!) and has anyone been to a Bad, Bath and Beyond?!?!?
That place was heavenly.

For us though, the biggest joys were Trader Joe's and Uwajimaya (an asian food import store)....

Homemade sushi anyone? Or, how about Panang or Pad Thai?

YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone,

Wow! I got lots of great info re: mail order shopping from this thread.

AnnNYpisces,

Re: shopping. I did the same thing before I got here and ended up bringing things that I didn't need. Be very selective. Thus far, I haven't missed very much except linens and footwear (which can also be expensive here), and I solved that problem during this last trip to the states :)!

BTW Don't forget to stop at DSW -- the clearance racks are full of sandals and flip-flops, most of which are priced in $7 - $20 range. YEAH!!!

Onika,

I LOVE Bed, Bath and Beyond and Trader Joes too!!!!

I have been fortunate to get many wonderful thongs on Ebay, either at significant discounts or for products whose distributors would not ship via USPS.

Hi Onika.

Your remark made me smile. I grew-up on the West Coast and everyone I knew called flip flops "thongs" but then "thongs" came to mean something other than footwear so for the sake of clarity I switched to flip flops. It turns out in this instance it doesn't matter because eBay undoubtably has "wondeful thongs" of both types, providing the non-footwear type can be accurately construed as "wonderful" by a woman. Thanks for the grins!

A note about ebay...make sure you come to an agreement with the seller regarding shipping before you buy. Some sellers automatically consider the USVI to be international, and the shipping charge will reflect that.

dnt, glad to see my error provided you with a giggle; while it was not my intention (I meant "things"), I shall take credit. 😉

BTW, having lived in Brazil, I believe there is a time and place for "those" thongs, and the VI 'aint one of them!

WAY too conservative...

Now, maybe I should pick up a few on Ebay for my next trip to SXM...?

haha.
