Wedding and event designer looking to relocate
Hello!
I currently live on an island in nc. I am looking to slowly transition, my personal life and business to usvi. I've planned, owned 2 event venues, and designed wedding flowers for 7 years. I have a few questions:
What would be the most popular location to conduct a marriage? Where is the demand?
Any floral designers or people in the industry have tips i.e., job openings, anything that might help?
Wholesale floral supplier?
Organization that promotes weddings through out island?
Most popular resort for weddings and events?
Is the market saturated?
Can you conduct business out of your home, as the transition may take time to establish a location.
Eventually I will be looking for a place to live for myself and 2 daughters, 6 months from now.
by location do you mean island or areas on an island?
I'm looking for the specific island and region that shows the most demand for wedding and event sales
Thank you.
I think you'll find a lot of competition and companies already in business on all 3 islands whether destination event or wedding planners as well as florists.
Google it.

If you're setting up a business you have to register at Lt. Governor's Office, Division of Trademarks and well as getting a business license from Dept. Of Licensing and Consumer Affairs.
One can work out of their home.
Lots of destination weddings in the VI. On STX beach weddings at Carambola, Buccaneer, Palms at Pelican Cove are popular.
As is often recommended here - before starting your own new business it may well benefit you to get a job in the industry and over time design your own niche to serve a need you see unfilled or even take over and improve an existing business.
It's better if you already have a flourishing business and can expand it but as mentioned there are flourishing businesses here so newbies start up may prove different and difficult.
Maybe, indeed, start out working with an already established company. Challenging here may be quite different than what you're used to. Something to consider, especially if you have CEO/MANAGEMENT capabilities are available to trouble shoot and able to be on call 24/7.
What EZ said. This market is too small and already well served for someone to just come in and set up shop as an event planner, unless you have the resources to wait for a long time to be profitable.
Why do you want to move to the Virgin Islands? Have you visited here before?
And not to beat up on you, but...
You want information that some business people may have taken years to figure out? I agree that you should come down on a look-see visit and try to network on your own. 🙂
Flowers are absurd here. I wanted some simple small things for a dinner party and ONE ROSE was $12. I laughed and realized that's always why I decorate guest room and the table with bougainvillea. I know it's because they have to be refrigerated to get here but for real who has that kind of money laying around... for flowers.
Can't speak to weddings because I think they're silly lol. But there's already a pretty small niche that seems to be filled.
There certainly many event planners here of varying degrees of success. I would think that your biggest challenge in coming here and trying to set up shop without having been here working the industry for awhile is finding good, reputable, punctual, available, vendors. Then you would have to build good relationships with them. An event planner is really only as good as the vendors they work with. We have lots of hiccups in daily life that throw things off schedule. People who hire planners don't want to hear about hiccups, they want things to go off flawlessly. I would say that you need to work the industry for awhile (a couple of years) before you try and venture out on your own.
Flowers are tough here. The need for constant refrigeration is big challenge and also very expensive. A flower shop I know of on STJ (closed for a long time now) would receive shipments where half of them were already dead. And although they put out beautiful arrangements, they were very, very expensive and lasted only a couple of days unless they were sitting in a super cold AC environment. Most 'stateside' flower type arrangements are made with flowers that simply don't like it here. We have so many gorgeous flowers growing abundantly here in the wild that it's kind of silly to drop a bunch of money on roses and such.
For more info on getting a business license here, you can go to the VI Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs website. And a heads up, sometimes getting a license here can take many months... it's just red tape and a PIA. DLCA
