We want to move away from Canada...
Hi there,
My husband and I and our two children (3mons and 10years) are seriously considering a move to St. Croix. I am in the travel/tourism industry and he is in the medical field. Does anyone know if it is easier to get a visa from this end or to wait until you are there or for an employer to get you one. We are thinking of making the move somewhere between October and January...time for a change and the islands are calling!
Any info would be greatly appreciated on visas, employment and employment opportunities.
Thanks!!!
Exactly the same immigration rules apply to the USVI as to the US mainland. As a non-US citizen, you cannot obtain a working visa unless an employer is agreeable to sponsoring you and an employer can only sponsor you if they are trying to fill a position which cannot be filled locally. Most employers trying to fill positions for which there are no qualified local (i.e. on-island) applicants recruit from qualified people in the US (i.e. US citizens) as the paperwork entailed in hiring non US citizens is massive and time-consuming.
Your husband might want to contact the Juan Luis Hospital on St. Croix. If he has some medical expertise that they absolutely need and can't find in the U.S., there's that possibility. BUT, if he were to get a work permit, that permit would be for him only and wouldn't allow you to work.
Sorry, but there's no way that you'd be able to move here and work in your time frame as, even if you found an employer willing to sponsor you, the work permit process is extremely time-consuming.
Visit the islands for a wonderful vacation!
Thanks for that insight...
