water! water!! water!!!
Good evening everyone!!
I know that water is scarce on the island and that people have different sized cisterns and even that different parts of the islands get differing amounts of rain to be collected. I know that if you run out then you have to buy some to use that is expensive! What I don’t know is how much is the average person on STX using in a month? We have been tracking our usage and trying to bring it down. Is anyone living on the islands keeping up with how much water they average per month. Also, I have seen several houses on the market that have wells. Does St. Croix have fresh water underground or is it just brine water in need of an r/o filter? Thanks for the input!!!
Donnie
I don't know how much I use, but I always use as little as possible.
There are some properties that have wells. Some are deep and some are shallow. Some are so deep that they will give you water during the most prolonged drought. If you buy a property with a well and tap it, you also need to install a filter, because the pump with stir up the sediment at the bottom and make the water brackish in a few weeks.
Properties with deep wells can be expensive to buy, but they can be goldmines. You find someone who can put in an irrigation system and farm the land or you figure out how to do it yourself. There are a million and one insects, fungi, and bacteria that can destroy your crops here, but you figure out what they are and use the right means to destroy them. Having a property with a deep well and using it to your advantage is like striking oil here.
Donnie, you're on the right track. Keep researching this. I am only now learning about it myself.
