water pump station
Three years ago, I lived on STT, and remember a light blue building half way between havensight and charlotte amalie. Does anyone have any information regarding that building (ie Is it still there, is it being used, who owns it etc.)?
Hello Scott,
Yes its still there. I want to say thats its always been used as a pump house as you said. Government owned I believe. As I recall last year I contacted the Adopt a Spot group and the pump house was one of the options for adopting to beautify the outside. It gets fixed up and then vagrants often break a window shutter and sleep inside and then it looks bad again. I would have to ask around - see what I can find out.
Ronnie do you know anything about the building.

It is the pump house that pumps sea water to the downtown fire hydrants. In the days of old, the downtown houses had salt water flush! So it was utilized more at that time. It does belong to the government. Recently they put plywood on the doors and windows as a vagrant did set up house there!
Ronnie
hey islander,
tell me more about this "Adopt a spot" group. how can i contact them and get involved in the group? do they have a web site?
Hi Ronnie,
Plywood on the doors & windows? it sound more like a crack house than a water pump station. Anyway, if you know how I could get more info on the property it would be greatly appreciated.

Not quite Scott, if you remember the building is not much of anything - its a one square room pump house - with a wooden door and wooden shutters on the windows .... over the years as mentioned folks have put OK looking shutters and a shutter type door however they were broken off in various ways, and also the salty ocean is right there and weathers the building quickly - so as the building is just a pump house to prevent people from going inside they just put a board over the windows which really is what was there before anyway. There is usually one guy that I have always seen hanging out there, perhaps he has deemed it his "home".
I just noticed you described it as light blue - I think when you were here is about when it was renovated, painted with new shutters - so perhaps that is why you remember it the way you do.

Scott,
Call the Public Works Department at (340)7764844, thats the general number - ask to be connected to folks in charge of Salt Water Pumps... and you will be forwarded. Also ask the general operator about the Adopt a Spot Program... I called and they wanted to know who I was and why I was asking first before answering questions about pump house. Said it hasn't been used for its original purposes since around 94-95 - so I guess give them a call and ask about what you need to know. Be very polite - this is a government office and as mentioned they were a bit weary of the inquiry. 🙂

C'mon Islander, "polite" is my middle name! OK so it isn't, but still, I understand what you mean. I thrilled that you found that phone number for me. That is a start anyway.
All I have to say is "You're a rock star Islander, don't you dare go changing!" Thanks again pal, I'll let you know what I found out.
