I installed a 6 stage filtration with a Reverse Osmosis membrane system 6 years ago (my wife drinks LOTS of water).
we also decided to install a ice maker(I use LOTS of ice...burp!),.
It works great, I changed 2 of the 6 filters twice. The water is awesome!
When we first got the house, the water was funky (the cistern was just Therosealed, the retarded contractor< I wonder what kind of $hit I`ll get for saying that<< didn`t wait long enough to dry before filling IMO.
In either case, I think a Aqua Pure/Britta shoved on the end of a fixture would have a short life (even if you didn`t hire the mental giant the former owner did here).
The reverse Osmosis filtration system I use has a 3 gallon pressurized tank so when WAPA(other mental giants I guess I`m not supposed to call retarded or I`ll offend people here) goes out, you still have 3 gallons of clean water to cook/clean with even if all the pressure is gone from your other pipes/fixtures.

The difference in installation is in the states, you use the product water in the 3 gallon tank, the excess water goes into the drain, then into the cities sewer.
Here, you`ll return the non-product water to your cistern.
A pressure of at least 50 PSI needs to be maintained for the membrane to work properly.
When I pumped up my pressure here after installing, some leaks occurred revealing former shoddy(can I call the local plumber retarded too?)plumbers handy work.
I`m sorry(no I`m not) for being hard on these local tradesman(I have different words I like to use), but I guess it`s OK if they perform poorly as I`m told their really nice & don`t charge too much!
Me, I think they charge too much & I think you get the picture!

Unfortunately, I`m old enough to remember Plumbing as a art, when we used to sweat pipes.
All fittings were soldered.
IMO, any idiot can slip/glue PVC pipe, there is no expertise in it what so ever.
It is no longer a skilled trade(I don`t care what anybody says).

how about boiling the water before using the Brita....not good enough? Alot people drink tap water with no problem so i am wondering if the Osmosis system is overkill? Don't really know. I have a charcoal filter in line and use tap water ice cubes all the time, with no probelms that I can see so far. but i don't use a ton of ice. I try not to be a germ-o-phobe, but then, I don't want to die.

I know several people who drink their cistern water with only the simple 1 stage filter on it. I don't myself. I also know a few more who have just the 1 stage on the whole house and then a PUR on the kitchen faucet and love it. It is all a factor of how clean you keep your cistern and what your taste preference is.

My cat drinks from the toilet & hasn`t had any problems & I don`t think he`s a germ-o-phobe, but I haven`t gotten around to explaining what we do with that toilet either!
The charcoal filter is much better than the paper filter I`ll agree.
Those water machines in PriceSmart & Cost U Less are reverse osmosis, it` s really for the taste (but that may BE overkill as the water going into it is from WAPA which is RO water!)<<Of course,The USVI we has things going on in our plumbing system, so perhaps, it`s just as well.
And another thing about taste, people get used to it, even if the entire rest of the world thinks your water tatses awful, yet you`ll think it`s fine!

My RO Filter purchase & installation had more to do with economics(top reason), carring a bunch of bottles, storage, cardboard boxes(bugs), plastic in land fills, yada yada.
I figure we use 3 gallons a day, accounting for vacation time/etc. !`d guess thats 6,300 gallons over the course of 6 years.
At $1 a gallon...(I won`t give the obvious total, but last week a cashier had to use a calculator to determine 50% off a dollar).

The filtration system I got was new, from Ebay, spent USPS PPfor $350 total, including shipping & spare filters... that`s almost $6000 saved! and, I didn`t have to carry/store all that water!
The installation was free as I did it myself, figure 2-5 hrs. (depends on your particular installation, you`ll need room for your tank & extra fixture included).

Link does not work, but the web page ( http://www.generalecology.com)does.
The seagull IV seems like a system i would use.
I`m sure your also happy you don`t have to hassle buying/carrying bottled water.
How long have you had it?
How much $ have you saved?

Hmm, have had it for 5 to 8 years. I have no idea how much money we have saved. It is very convenient.
