Waste Mgt. Seeking Citizen Advisory Volunteers

I hope everyone knows that the USVI has NO long range plan to solid waste disposal .... now that Alpine Energy has fled the scene. Both landfills (STT and STX) are out of EPA compliance and can no longer dispose of material. What they are doing right now, is taking the MSW to a transfer station. The material is compressed into bales and then covered / sealed in plastic. The bales are then be used to cover (cap) the landfills. The closure process will take about 2 years .... so we don't have to worry "yet". Once the landfills are closed, any new MSW will need to be remediated some other way .... or shipped off island. I'm sure that would be a cheap solution. For anyone that wants to provide input for the future, WMA is seeking volunteers:

VIC - you are correct ... other than composting. I wonder who will want to live near the compost pile?

In any case, incineration was the plan with Alpine Energy .... who rode off into the sunset after spending $13M and nothing to show. And if Alpine spent $13M, just think of all the WAPA and tax payer funded hours that were burnt ... and nothing to show. Not to mention that WAPA does not do any of their own studies and RFP preparation and pays outside consultants for this.

But, Hodge still has waste-to-energy on the agenda.
