warning: pregnant lady coming to STT
My husband and I are heading to STT this Thursday, islanders beware. LOL. I must say that this board has helped me research a lot of the "issues" that I had with the move. Just to refresh your memory, my husband is actually staying in STT on Thursday to work for the university. I am moving there (from Louisiana) in August after the birth of our first child. We know in advance that this move is only for a year, which has helped with the stress of making the is-this-right-for-us decision. For those of you who have given me advice (both positive and negative) up until this time, I truly appreciate it. The opportunity for my husband is just too great for us to pass up (he is a marine biologist and will be working with some other "big name" marine biologists there.)
So...on to the actual question for this post. Are there any places that we need to see that only the "locals" know about? This will, essentially, be a PMV for me, even though the hubby is staying. So, I want to make sure I see the "real" part of the island. I want to at least have a "picture" in my head of what I will be heading to soon. I have lived overseas and dealt with culture shock before, so I know that a week-long visit will not even begin to encompass the actual "differences" there, but I would like to get as real of an idea as possible.
We will be looking at housing while there, but, luckily, the university is putting my husband up for the first few weeks, so there is not as much of a rush. Are there local grocery stores around the university that anyone would recommend? What about local diners / restaurants? I want to avoid all things touristy (there will be plenty of time to see all of that when I actually move down there). Any other good "dives" that the locals frequent?
Again, thanks so much for all of your help so far. I'm sure I'll have tons of new questions when I return! Especially about dealing with post-pardum stress and culture shock at the same time! LOL.
Oh, and April, if I discover any great information for us new moms, I will be sure to share it with you. Good luck making your decision for your family's situation.
After you move I hope you will continue to post and let us know how it goes. There is nothing better than hearing from a voice of experience.
Good luck.
Hook, Line & Sinker is in Frenchtown which isn't that far from UVI. Mostly locals go there & the food is reasonable & good. I think Pueblo near the Nisky Center is the closest bigger grocery store. Over by the cruise ship docks at Havensight, lots of locals go to Delly Deck for breakfast & lunch. I've seen the ex-governor there as well as taxi drivers.
Hello smilekl,
Down at Brewers Bay, which is the beach by the University, there are usually a couple food vans. Good place to grab pates or chicken and johnny cake.
By the airport, which is just a few minutes drive from the University, at the entrance/turn in for the airport parking/terminal area on the left side is Atlantic Seafood (used to be Ashley's) another good spot for local food on the go. While in that area you can check out the playground which is across from the airport, next to Emerald Beach.
Tickles at Crown Bay Marina is another casual restaurant, good for lunch and they have some open Mic nights and live music nights that might be fun for you and hubby; its usually residents/locals hanging out and performing. Trade mentioned Pueblo as being the closest grocery store to UVI, there is a also a small convenience store at Crown Bay Marina (just a few steps from Tickles).
I second Hook, Line & Sinker that Trade suggested, nice casual place with good food. There are a couple other restaurant choices in Frenchtown (which is where Hook, Line & Sinker is located).
Of course stop by the grocery stores, K-mart etc. If planning to stop by banks, any government offices and so forth make note of the Easter holidays later this week.
Good Luck and definitely share what you think, find out etc. 😉
