WAPA
Can anyone tell me what I need to take to WAPA to have the electricity turned on? I was on the phone holding for a very long time and still didn't get to talk with anyone.
Thanks,
Marion
You will either need a notorized lease or one on a realtors letterhead or if you own the property, proof of ownership. I would take your driver's license and if you have your SS card take it they love it here. Take a number when you get there and take something to read, you may have a long wait. I would go early in the morning. If the number thing is out of numbers memorize everyone who's there before you. And when you walk in remember to greet everyone. 🙂
Also you'll need cash, check or cc to pay the deposit. About $125 more or less.
You'll also need to know the name of the last person whom lived in the place you are trying to establish power. If that is unavailable you need to get the number off the meter...........And your landlords phone/cell#, they called mine to verify I actually DID live there. My deposit just for current was $150. I don't remember how much the water deposit was, forgot to sign up for both on the initial visit & hub had to go back the following day. Moral of this story....If you need both current and water be sure to say so!!! Or you will just get one without the other!

When I bought my house getting Wapa wasn't a big issue...went early, waited maybe 5 minutes in the lobby looking at the display that shows teh difference in power consumption between regular bulbs and CFC bulbs (cool). Was called back by number into an office where I presented my deed and license. I had my 2 power meter numbers with me (I have a separate meter for my downstairs apartment). I also asked for a water hookup. About 10 minutes later I emerged with the necessary paperwork and went to the cashier to pay my deposits. I had 3 deposits to make (2 power, one water) so it came to a lot of money, like $300 or so which I think I charged but I may have written a check for.
4 days later, ON A SUNDAY NO LESS, the power was turned on. Again, ON A SUNDAY. Wow!

Great line!
I woke up in the wee hour Sunday (like 4:30 am) and heard a nasty noise coming from outside. NO!! I cried!! PLEEEASE NOOO!!
Of course it was true...the sound of a busted water pipe spewing water down the driveway for who knows how long! Hubby tried his best to fix it, but we both were just plain soaked with no luck. We needed WAPA to shut it off in order to fix. SO much for the so-called emergency number! Finally got through around 8:30am and they sent some dudes over by around 9. We are lucky to have cisterns (not yet cleaned and smells kinda funky, but it works). Now they are saying something about me having to install some plumbing doo-dad next to their shut-off...but I don't think so! Plus, I have it on record (cell phone) the time I first tried to contact them via emergency line. I plan to make sure I'm NOT charged for the water wasted between that time 'till I reached them.
Am I nuts to do this or justified? Will let you know next week when they get back to work from Carnival. Any input is welcome!
Also, back to the original post, also look for the sign-in sheet outside the door if you get there before they open. It's usually on a table there in the courtyard.
Ha emergency number/ Since when does an emergency number's mailbox get full. That the was the message i once received from WAPA. Go figure
My WAPA story...
Came home this afternoon and my power was turned off.
Call Wapa, -apparently I owed them $90 from last month.
But I said, "hey, I just got your bill for this month and it totaled the two amounts -last month's and this month's together- and the bill clearly says I have til the 18th of this month to pay so that's what I was going to do." (today is the 6th) No notice, no red tag, no warning, nothing.
They have a person on duty at night you can call, and they dispatch a worker to turn it back on. "He's still in your neighborhood" they said.
30 minutes later the guy arrived to turn the power back on. I asked him why they would turn it off for past balance that was less than 30 days old ...and do so without any warning, and he said, "Oh, we were working in your section today, and when we're in your section if you have ANY balance past due we turn off your service." I said, "You're freakin kidding me, how about a notice or something!" He just said, "yeah, that's the way it works, ...if we had NOT been working in your section today or this week, we would not have turned it off. You're just unlucky."
So, word to the wise: "you're not in Kansas anymore."
WAPA is an excellent example of a company that will do what it wants when it wants to do it. I will tell you that the workers are great peolple and do a very good job. But the bull you sometimes need to go through to get something done will try you. EVERY state inj the US allows you to connect to the power grid to send back solar or wind excess power to save the environment. NOT WAPA! Is electricity different here in the islands than the main land? Or are they are just keeping their ass covered with our gold.
You decide!

Just to put it out there in case people don't know, you can pay wapa online. Not saying you didn't know, but its one less check to have to write. Here's the link: https://www.customerservice.viwapa.vi/Click2GovCXP/Index.jsp
I believe you have to apply for a pin number first, it took me about a week to get one.
It`s my understanding, WAPA will pay you for NET metering, if you qualify as a utility/power provider.
which means(I think)Wapa charges you retail power, while they pay you wholesale for the power you provide off peak(no matter when you generate it).
It kinda sounds like my bank offering me a secured loan @ 5%, while they pay me 2% for MY money they have there(they must think it`s thiers??)

good thinking betty to mention that... i have been doing that since one of my checks got lost between here and puerto rico and back again. the late notice came and i know i'd sent the check. so, i paid the two bills, only to get a credit on the following one when the check arrived. since then i log on and pay early... and if i cannot get onto the site (as happened once when they had issues), i called in my payment on the telephone!
The online Wapa payment is great, I just wish they would do what my other monthly billing companies do (Sprint, Dish etc.) and do an automatic debit so i don't have to remember to actually log on to pay them. I am constantly forgetting...I get the bill but I'm busy so I don't logon immediately and next thing I know RED SLIP.

I use auto-pay for Dish, ATT and Broadband, but I'd be scared to death to have WAPA auto-pay! Might get a really nasty surprise on your credit card or bank statement!
You don't have to do autopay. 🙂 I go to the website and pay each month, usually after I get my bill. Innovative offers autopay as well and there is a website for innovative as well if anyone wants it. http://www.innovativetelephone.com/login1.aspx
I do autopay for my clients that want it, but personally I don't trust any company enough to use it.
I don't mind nasty credit card bill...that's what I use my cards for, a buffer between me and my money. If they screw up I get my cc company on it and dispute the charge, not a big deal. I'd rather have this than accidentally end up without power because I forgot to visit that website! I just wish they offered this option....but the fact I can pay online at all is still appreciated.

Actually by going to that wapa site you can set it up for autopay. 🙂 The call it on demand I believe. I would advise against it because wapa does indeed make mistakes on a regular basis. As you probably notices by everyone's rants with this place. Scotiabank is still the worst, but wapa's in the top 5.
The on demand just store's your cards on their website so you don't have to remember the number each time. I've never had it actually "auto pay" my bill...I still have to remember to go to the website every month, logon, click on the "on demand link" select my credit card, confirm etc. I use this...never had any problems with Wapa but I'm sure I will one day...at that point I will make it my CC company's problem 🙂
