WAPA Board Votes to Raise Rates
When the government pays invoices from my company twice...I don't send those checks back either, unless they ask. Over the years, its happen many times. My reward for having to deal with their incompetence.
So the hospital sent me a bill 18 months after my procedure. They did not process the claim against my insurance company. I changed insurance companies 4 months ago and the old company will not accept the claim because it was submitted 90 days after my account was closed.
Now, am I obligated to pay this bill???
Yep. Last I checked, the hospital had telephone service. And I'll bet your insurance company did too.
So if they had submitted the insurance on a timely basis, they insurance would have paid 100% of the bill. Because of their ineptitude, I should be the one to pay 100% of the bill? Really?
Guess what happened?
In 18 months, you didn't inquire about the status of your debt obligation that you knew you had incurred? Really? Just another example of rationalization.
No, I did KNOW there was a bill. Ever had an extended stay for a major condition? There are dozens of bills.

You indicated it was the hospital bill. As in, how could you not know you would have a hospital bill?
If the hospital has an agreement with your insurer to submit claims, it would include a timely filing clause, and you would be off the hook.
If you signed an authorization of benefits, allowing the hospital to submit the claims, on your behalf, in order to receive payment directly, you would be off the hook.
If this was for ancillary (outpatient hospital charges billed as inpatient), and the conditions above applied, you would be off the hook.
If this was for outpatient professional services (xray or lab interpretation, etc), and the above conditions applied for the provider in question, or you had it in writing you would be off the hook.
If none of the conditions above applied, and if the services were rendered, you owe the bill. In other words, (unless there's a VI law addressing timely billing I don't know about), unless otherwise contracted, the hospital has NO obligation to honor your insurance company's rules. And unless otherwise contracted with the provider, you ARE under obligation to pay for services received, no matter when billed. Does this excuse the hospital for terrible billing practices? No. Is it fair? No. Does this absolve you of your incurred debts? No.
Yes, I am off the hook because the hospital screwed up. I had over 20 separate bills from the hospital. How did I know that they forgot to bill me for a doctors consultation that I did not attend?
