Tip the entire package.....food & drink 😉

Absoutely agree! The exception, for some people, is on bottles of wine.

I owned a small restaurant years ago and have always been concerned about the inequities involved in tipping. I decided right or wrong to tip based on my own feeling and not the size of the check. I tip much larger comparatively to small lower cost places, and tip much less for higher priced fancy restaurants. As an example, on luxury dinner costing three or four hundred dollars I might only tip 10%, while getting great service at a hamburger place I might tip 30% or more.

I understand that the high priced place has to split with more people, but I always try to "over tip" the hard working waitperson in the less expensive place.:-)

Ms Info that's a great idea.

My posting the amount was based on a two people dining at an average place. The hourly wage if tipped at 20% based on the tables I watched the staff person serve would have been close to $55.00 per hour.

We've already decided tipping should be based on the quality of service. We want our servers to be courteous, knowledgeable, friendly, but not overly so, fast, able to multi-task, etc. In other words, we want them to be trained professionals! Why should they make less than your plumber, barber, landscaper, mechanic, etc.? Remember they have to make it on their merit, the plumber hands you a bill. Also, most servers don't work 40 hours per week because of the nature of the restaurant schedule. If they want 40 hours, they need to work a second job. I say if they are earning it, give it to them. I'm not concerned with how much they are making per hour. I am concerned with how their service affects me. If a server is good enough to juggle multiple tables and still provide service that warrants a 20% tip, then bully for them!

Juanita who's the we've? "We've already decided tipping should be based on the quality of service."

Are you speaking for the board as a whole in your comment? Are you stating this is the rule of the islands?

I guess as much as anything, most of the postings on this thread and previous ones about the same subject.

I suppose if I were to ask you don't you agree that tipping should be based on the quality of service, I would be starting this whole thread all over again, so I won't ask.:D

By the way, if that really matters to anyone or offends anyone, I will be glad to change it to I've instead of we've.

If waiters start making as much as plumbers. Plumbers will just charge more till they make about twice what a waiter makes. Not many people want there job so they have power.

Yeah, plumbers might have been a bad comparison. Notice I didn't say electricians!!

My stateside daughter has waited tables thru highschool and college and she tells me all sorts of interesting stories.
There are many poor-tippers out there, and people who leave no tip. So like creditcard rates, those of us who DO RIGHT are making up for those who do wrong.

When you pay a tip, it's often shared with the bus and cook staff.
Never met a rich waitress, and waiting tables continues to be on the bottom of "annual wage" lists accding to the Dept of Labor.
It's hard work, and dealing with the masses is often thankless work, God love them.

Hard to get rich waiting tables, but I have known several bartenders on St. Thomas averaging around $300 a night, working 4 or 5 nights a week. Not bad, considering you know they don't pay all the taxes, plus the uniform is casual, so no need to spend money on clothes, dry cleaning, etc. Throw in a free shift meal (or discount) and a shift drink. Not only were they excellent bartenders, they were very attractive young ladies with great personalities.

Explains why you are all over every post on tipping. I thought real estate rentals had you tied up.

QueenofdeRock,
I'm not sure why all the "baiting". Do I know you? Whatever...Yes I do participate in threads on tipping. It's something I know about and feel I have something positive to add. A lot of people moving to the islands are looking for jobs in the restaurant industry, so I imagine they are interested. I used to not post very often, mostly when I was pushing one of my rentals, but a while back I had a computer problem, and I sent out a plea for help. Everyone was so helpful, with all kinds of good information and ideas, and I really appreciated it. So, now, if I feel like I can help by giving info or even just voicing my opinion, I jump in there. Why not? And to be honest, it's fun. So, if you want the thread to die, that's easy. Just don't click on it.

I notice you are newly registered. Welcome to the forum! I hope you will appreciate all the good information and advice available to you here. I find I can take the information I want or need and offer up what I can in return, enjoy the camaraderie and bantering that goes on, and really try not to take it too seriously!8-)

All the best,
Juanita

to tip or not to tip, that is the question. i tip at least 20% if service is good less if its not. if its really bad i might not leave a tip ( does not happen much ) i take into consideration what is going on in the place. busy, server alone, big parties etc... i will not blame the server for something they have no control over. you have to be extremely rude and ignorant for me not to leave a tip. yep i was a waitress for 14 years raising my son alone after left husband, no child support, hard work but i loved it. now we do have friends who owned a rest. at one time and i think their standard tip is about 10%, its very embarassing to go out to dinner with them because of that.
spplit checks, no big deal as long as they tell you up front.
i have only had bad service once here on the island from a red head man that was working at the bombay club, he was the rudest person ive had wait on me in about 10 years and if we had been alone he would not have gotten a tip. i did write to the owner with my complaint and never got a reply but the next time we went in she gave us a couple of extra food items. i have never seen him again but i still remember his attitude and him. that was at least 3 years ago.
i tip on the complete deal, if i have a coupon i tip on price before the coupon is used.
parties of six or more, if they add the tip on the bill, i know some places that do not enforce the rule, try it out next time if its not something you think should be put on the bill. personally i hate it and generally do not leave extra because of it. they would have gotten more from me had they not done that.
just my two cents
