Help...I'd like to find a certain item to give as a Christmas gift. It'd be a Virgin Islands field guide-type book, and would contain information on identifying edible plants in the VI and how to prepare them (if necessary). If anyone knows if such a book even exists, please let me know! If you know a web site where I can buy such a book, that'd be great. I'm on St. John if there is a store here that might carry such a thing. Thanks!

Dockside Books on St Thomas has a pretty good selection of books about flora and fauna. I know there is one titled "Traditional Medicinal Plants of St Croix, St Thomas and St John- A Selection of Plants" put out by the Cooperative Extension Service of UVI.

And the late (great) Arona Peterson wrote several books on using local plants and fruits in recipes. Dockside I'm sure has them!

Hello Andrea,

The National Park Visitor's Center in Cruz Bay has some books - they might have something.

st. georges botanical gardens(on stx) wrote a book about all the native plants to the virgin islands, it is in paper back and probably costs about 6.95. it is very comprehensive as far as the native plants to the islands but may not have the practical use information that you are after, but because of the cost you may be able to combine this book with a few others mentioned previously and give a group of books, just a thought.
also it is more of a shrub and tree book than an herb or bush tea type book.
