Virgin Islands Daily News No Longer Publishing Movie Schedule STT
Supposedly they surveyed people and many respondents said they don't read the paper so they canceled their ads. That does not bode well for the newspaper.
St Thomas Source still posts online, but they are not always accurate.
According to industry reports, movie ticket sales continued to drop in 2014 and were the lowest since 1995. The price of movie tickets continues to rise. Realistically, movie theaters are becoming obsolete while the increase in home viewing continues to rise in leaps and bounds. I don't see how the discontinuing of movie advertising in a local newspaper is in itself a bad omen for the newspaper - sales of newspapers are also in fast decline and have been for several years. It's a new age!
most people i know where i work go to the movies a lot.
I don't think ticket sales are in steep decline here. Prices are not that bad and fewer entertainment options. It's also a social thing - get out and enjoy people.
You know people here don't like change so they wanted to start a call in campaign to complain. I asked them if they were going to pay for the spots in the paper and then had to read online schedule.
lol
Most cable and dishtv services these days have programming guides at your fingertips so having a published one in the paper might be superfluous. Makes sense they would not continue.

Since the nationwide decline has been going on for several years now I'm sure they are indeed declining locally. Eliminating newspaper advertising was likely a cost-cutting move as newspaper advertising on a regular basis isn't inexpensive.
One of the reasons I don't go out to the movie theater here is because of the "social thing - get out and enjoy people" aspect you mentioned. Between the crying babies and people who sit and yak loudly all the way through the movie, it's not particularly enjoyable! I can lounge around watching comfortably at home in peace and quiet ...
I like to see most movies when they're released, and if somebody is talking, I move. I report crying babies to mgr, but don't think I've heard one in years.
I think foreign ticket sales are good, so I think we're considered Intl sales for movies.
I hardly ever go to the movie theatre because the movies I like rarely come here to the VI (I'm a movie snob, I admit) However, when I do go (Gravity, Slumdog Millionnaire are two that I recall) I go because I know I'll get the full experience on the large movie screen. No matter how large your bigscreen tv might be at home, you can never duplicate the big screen experience in the theatre. It's just not the same.
Sigh, I hear ya islandjoan. We get so few Oscar nominated movies that we can't join many film discussions with our Stateside movie friends.
You can get the schedule on IMDB.
I always wondered why they don't have matinees during the week....
Very few small communities have daytime matinees during the week, from what I remember. That's one of the joys of living in a big city.
In the olden days, when there were actually movie theaters in town, Center Theater on main street and Apollo theater by the park, they had they had very early day-time/ all day movies for kids and they would be packed with school kids who were, by today's standards, exceedingly well behaved. No guns, knives or violence and little adult supervision except for the movie staff. They showed cartoons and age appropriate movies for grade school kids. It was the thing to do on a Sat. Sunday was for church, going out to breakfast afterwards, hitting the bookstores and visiting friends and family, going to the beach.
They had kiddie matinees on Saturdays when I was kid in the States, but not everywhere that I lived.
Gave parents a break, and we knew we had to behave or they would put us out of the theater. I watch some of those movies now!
On STX, many of the 3D movies show only after 9:00 PM.
Sorry, but I have to wake up in the morning.

Bird man and theory of everything are available on dish network PPV for $7.00
thanks, but I don't have Dish. They couldn't answer my questions so I chose not to go with them. Is that the only Oscar film available? Maybe I could get a Dish dedicated TV and keep other TV?
You don't need a dedicated TV for Dish.
I want another TV I think if Dish can give me current movies. What else do I get? What do I need to get it?
I don't like having all eggs in one basket here on VI.
I get DVDs thru Netflix (I know, old school by now!) to satisfy my indie, foreign and oscar nominated film appetite.
But I still enjoy watching them on the big screen WHEN they come here. They are few and far between.
On that note, has anyone seen Still, Alice? I bet that it doesn't come here (too small an audience). But I'm not entirely sure I want to see it...I think it's going to be pretty hard core and hit close to home...
Yes, Netflix is a lifesaver. I get DVDs and stream when House of Cards is playing. There were more titles on DVDs than streaming so I kept the DVD plan.
I check the movie listing online anyway. No biggie.
