good idea moving this ramble over to here. hope it does not go much further, but i want to repeat, that evil has no profile.

Well I was wondering how long it would take for someone to use the R word.I guess when I said" if a white man would have done the same thing."..... to hang their white ass too...... I'm Racist against white folk.also..Huh ?. Nothing I said is not true .The problem that THIS white ,teeth missing,back wood hillbilly... ( nice job of profiling btw)...is we have allowed a climate perfect for bad guys to expect little or no punishment for crimes they commit.Now what affect does that have?? They walk right in to the Greek joint kill a good guy,walk right up to Off The Wall and rob them, No Fear of anyone else there having the means or gonads to give a little street justice. Let's all write a letter ?? Come on. So the milk toast mama ATTITUDE just descibes the mentality that allows this crap to continue year after year.I can't solve the social problems that create these guys ...sooo.. please don't ask me to shut up or threaten me because of what my eyes see . Poorthang: You really are coming off as a poor thing. What I objected to in your posts was the insertion of race and negative stereotyping. It was divisive and hurtful. Also,I did not call you a racist, but said your "approach is racist". There is a difference. I do not know you, and it would take repeated racist statements by you before I could possibly draw that conclusion.

True there are black people with the attributes and attitudes you describe, but there are people of all colors like that too. And as to hanging the white perpetrators, you did not preface that with the negative description of the type of white person you imagine committing the crime. Do you see the difference? You might have just advocated street justice and left it at that.

I did not threaten you or profile you in any way, so I'm not sure where that is coming from. But I do have a question for you. To what end do you feel it necessary to express your views on this issue in the way you do? Are you just a sqeaky wheel? A whiner? With all your bravado about "street justice" and taking on the thugs I half expected you to announce: "There's a new sheriff in town... and his name is Poorthang!"

BTW: Letter writing can be effective, as can supporting/electing politicians and judges that share your desire to make things better.

How's that letter writing campaign workin for ya now or in the past? The "elected officials" will not and have not done jack to put a stop to the crime on these islands.Half the time Tyrone and his cohorts get a slap,continuance or police mess it up so bad they couldn't or wouldn't prosecute these punks.So yea I have no faith in any meaningful change anytime soon. The TRUTH cuts like a knife and hurts because if you were truly honest with yourself you'd have to admit the society that created this mess ,( no dad in the house ,gaming the system, you know what I'm talking about) has not stood up to correct themselves or their behavior. (i do not believe in violence unless there is no other choice, i will help to defend my family and friends if necessary, and i do not approve of the random acts of violence made on people in the USVI or anywhere else in the world...i just get riled by rants of blatant prejudice and hatred...i mean no disraspect to anyone else on this board)

It is painfully obvious that the citizens don't really care about the situation. Sure you hear allot of complaining on local talk stations and various websites however they constantly vote the same old do nothings into political office who waste time on and money on such stupid things as constitution conventions. Remember 2 years ago all the coversation was on the necessity of having a VI constitution, now you never hear about it. Crime always causes allot of conversation within a few days of a high profile incident and then all the talk goes away. What may be needed here is a grass roots political movement.

The beauty of being anonymous on a small island is I can say what I want in this type of forum without takin a ride to the Rain Forest Regardless of what you think I am.... you don't know me..... I love these islands and the majority of the people on them and have for a long time.I hate to see it so dysfunctional. I am pointing out what most people realize as a breakdown in a culture.... Here and the US....If you think you or your ancestors have been good stewards of these islands then honey you are sadly mistaken.ie pollution being constantly dumped into the once beautiful reefs,the trash on the beaches,the unpainted torn up buildings that remain unmaintained year after year,.the loss of developers, the pace of work that finally gets past the graft and corruption that prevails,.brush growing so high on the roads ,potholes.........Your politician buddies keep you right where they want you,....waitin in line for that check or gubment jobs and handouts .Instead of you all raisin hell that you don't like whats going on..... you must be content with the status quo.Am I takin jabs ....you bet I am ...not because I'm an insensitive racist white boy but perhaps to make you think . The continentals don't have the power that the majority (yes the black people) have .So use your power to make changes that will help the islands. prosperity is not a bad word.

The basic problems that you talk about here are all true, however you lose support from most us because you use derogatory terms to describe them. You also are prone to hyperbole and threats regarding solutions.

Yes, I agree that we have many young thugs living here. Yes, I agree that the government and the police do not do enough to try to control them. Yes, I agree that the welfare state mentality of many of those living in the projects contributes to this problem.

We all need to try help to find solutions. Name calling and uncontrolled anger are not the answer.

Part of the apathy is the very low number of registered voters. he unregistered all have their excuses, jury duty, past trouble, whatever.

Perhaps tying voter registration with getting a drivers licence or being eligible for public assistance or something could help the electorate have the intended power to have more control of their destiny. A basic course in civics taught in the schools would help them at least understand the process as it is intended to work.

Also keeping them in school to graduation would be huge. On my drive to work I pass through Christiansted town and see all the young (and older) professional working women going to their jobs. Then I drive through Watergut/Richmond and see young men just hanging out doing whatever they do. Is that cultural? The system is broken.

If someone gets cut out of their welfare check because they have dirty pee, would they re-consider their lifestyle?

Unfortunately, coke meth and crack fly through your system in about 3 days, while marijuana sticks in your system a bit longer. So, the hopped up and highly motivated thieves could still break into your car while making their welfare check. But, the stoner on the couch playing video games may need to cut out the ganja if he wants his government cheese.

This isn't isolated to these islands alone. My younger step-brother and his ever growing family regard a newborn as a pay raise. It frustrates the hell out of me.

If you have more children you should loose welfare.
If you fail a RANDOM drug test you loose welfare.
Welfare should only be for two to three years max, that gives anyone who is trying hard, time to get off of it.

Not gonna happen. I believe they enacted a law like this in Wisconsin (or some other state) and it was struck down by that state's Supreme Court as being unconstitutional - fourth amendment, unreasonable search and all.

There is currently a law pending in Kentucky for this very issue.

I hope they can do it.

Several years ago on 60 Minutes there was a story about a small town somewhere in the mid-west(?) that in order to receive welfare you had to work in some way even if it was just picking up trash on the side of the streets.
Everyone liked it even the people receiving help as it gave them a sense of worth.
WELLLL some lawyer got a hold of this and took the town to court. It was found to be discrimination because if they lived in a different town they could get their money and sit on their butts.

I'll just stand by my earlier statement that both views have some merit.
