Is the Villa Fairview in a pretty safe neighborhood? This is the best price I've seen for a temporary rental and I was wondering if it was too good to be true...

Hi Juni,

Have you tried searcning this messageboard for info on Villa Fairview? There have been many posting about this particular rental place...and many postings about "safe" neighborhoods. The general concensus seems to be that its a bad idea to walk home at night alone no matter where you live, and that many neighborhoods that some people call "bad" have "good" areas in them.

I haven't lived there yet so I can't really say but, I'd image that with the way the area grew and the roads were thrown up, that its difficult to distinguish where one neighborhood ends and the other starts...with each stretch of road having its own personality that can't quite be defined by the arbitrary lines later drawn around blocks of land to give them names.

Like I said, I haven't lived there myself, so all of this is probably just psycho-babble speculation. This is just how I've made sense of the "ya really gotta be here comments," the differing opinions about areas, and the difficulty obtaining a decent map of STT. Have you tried to get a detailed map of the STT? Its pretty much impossible. Every place has the same cheesy tourist map online or for sale. It sounds as though streets are called different names depending on who you're talking to and that the numbers don't run in any particular order. If someone knows how to get one with side streets and street numbers, please let me know.

Rx: While the "cheesy" tourist map may not seem much to you, that is about it! The locals do not think in topographical map fashion. Directions are usually in narrative form with indications of "an old truck" or a "tamarind tree" or "Mrs. Smith's house." Street numbers are not in "stateside" order. When you arrive and you are looking for some place, ask for directions and write everything down!

Hello Juni,

Its in Charlotte Amalie, on the hillside above town basically; its in an OK area. Not a good idea to walk in the evenings/night as mentioned, you can catch a taxi. Not too many temp. rentals here, mostly long term and there are of course lots of hotels...

Hey EE

I'm sure that when I'm there it'll be cool. It was just frustrating when I was searching for a place to live and couldn't figure out exactly where everything was. I finally just had to let it go and stop trying to find "the perfect place" from here. I'm sure I'll be happy where ever I am, if not, I'll deal with it then.
