VI Irony of the Day
Wanted to share the VI irony of the day with you all...I applied for a Citibank American Airlines card, since American is the prime US-flagged airline that consistently operates in the Caribbean. Although I detest American Airlines, I at least wanted to build status with them in the event that I might go from "ride in the overhead compartment" to "steerage class" while flying with them.
I got a rejection letter in the mail yesterday from Citibank, explaining that my credit was tip top, I'm a great guy, they're sorry, etc, but "unfortunately [we] don't accept applicants outside of the United States due to the inconsistency of mail delivery and postage for communication purposes and billing".
I received this rejection letter via the US Postal Service.
Happy Wednesday all 🙂
You can get a AA citi card though PR.
I have a AA Citi card with a VI address. Did you tell them the VI is US?
I'll have to re-contact them to let them know...it's shocking to me that a major bank doesn't know that St Thomas, VI is a US address...
I was talking to some business a while back (don't remember now who it was), and the lady kept insisting I tell her what state I was in. She had NO idea where I was talking about and simply could not comprehend that I was not in a state.
"outside of the United States" is just business shorthand for "not in the 50 states". You're not likely to get a given business to change their policy, even if technically their policy is written incorrectly.
For this specific case, consider instead getting a credit card that gives you a 1% credit on all purchases, and apply that "savings" to airline tickets, or anything else.
Had the same problem, you need the world citiadvantage card.

Works great, I put everything on it. You be surprised how quickly all the little stuff adds up here. Helps so much with trips home to see the family and vacations.
I use my AZ address since I am here more than STX :-(.
But it works great, I put everything on it. Have another free trip in Jan.
I pay it off each month so I don't have any intrest fees so they lose.:@)
My experience..if you have a citi advantage (or other) card with a stateside address, they will change it to a VI address. If you start fresh with a VI address, you have to go the different card through PR route. Same thing with AMEX...even more interestingly, had a VI address AMEX through puerto rico...cancelled it. Have an AMEX stateside, and they can't pull up any of the info (ie cardmember since detail etc) on the PR amex, they say it is entirely separate..
Regardless of the mailing address on the Citicard, we still got/get those annoying fraud shutdowns when we charged things in stx...like the wapa bill...sometimes they went/go through with no issue, other times they call me (at my 340#, no less) because it was a 'foreign transaction'...so now I use my amex, no problem..I had to call Citi this year and jump through hoops with a supervisor to get the property tax payment to go through, since the VI govt doesn't take amex...
