VI inter island car rental and travel
I have an extended stay in St John this summer and want to rent a car for entire month. It was suggested I rent on STT and take car on ferry to STJ. Any recommendations on what rental agency permits this and if this is best idea to save $$$? I also have friends visiting STX who plan to come to STJ to visit me. What is best option for them - ferry or fly? What carriers best $$$?
Thanks
Here's the phone book. You can find all the rental numbers in there. Some of the agencies do let you, but don't rely on what we tell you on here. Also, when you talk to them, be sure to ask about service if something happens on St. John. They used to tell people if they took the car to STJ, and it broke down, it was the renters responsibility to get it towed back to STT. Also, since you will be there in the summer (off-season), you may find the rates on St. John are competitive. They have mostly Jeeps on STJ.
I would recommend your friends take the seaplane from STX to downtown STT, and then the ferry to STJ. There is a ferry that docks right next to the seaplane. There is another ferry to St. John that runs out of Red Hook, but if they are coming in on the seaplane, it just makes sense to take the one from downtown. Just check the schedules in advance, so they don't get in on the plane, right after the ferry left!! By the way, in case you didn't know, you can't get from St. Croix to St. John without going through St. Thomas.
OK, understood - thanks. Is there a ferry from STX to STT? Would that be an suitable option?
Just a warning... if you attempt to drive between the islands you will get wet.
There is a ferry between STX & STT. It is the most inexpensive option between islands. You get what you pay for...fair warning some people call that ferry the "vomit comet". IMHO - It is an awful ride in anything but flat calm weather.
Ditto on the ferry. Even people that don't normally get seasick say its awful. I personnally get seasick. I've done it a few times with medication but it was still very unpleasant. The first thing they do is walk around and hand our vomit bags before or at the beginning or at take off. Only take it when I absolutely have too.
Also they cancel frequently. Supposed to run Friday thru Monday but that doesn't always happen. Sometimes because of weather sometimes who knows why. So if you pick the ferry be aware you may need a backup plan, which isnt too hard, seaplane leaves from the same area in STT and in STX they're about a mile apart.
