Went to the Div. of Motor Vehicles yesterday for vehicle inspection. No problem outside as the usual inspection went smoothly...and I then went inside with paperwork.

When my name was called [after 40 minutes...there were probably only 10 people in the whole place]..I went to pay with credit card...girl told me her credit card machine was not working and I would have to pay CASH!

Luckily I had the cash and paid.I looked at the charge of $49.00..
$30.00..registration fee[senior cit.]...THEN...$15.00 for Vehicle Inspection fee....THEN..$4.00 for "POT"....I asked about the extra $4.00...she then said that it "goes to the police dept."!!!!!!For what I asked...she said POLICE OVERTIME!!!
'
Isn't this double taxation? Can anybody explain this hidden fee??
This is the first time this has occurred when going there!

Get this...I then went to the "supervisor"..and asked he said he did not know about this!!

I've learned not to ask questions like this anymore. There are no sensible answers, especially from government employees. I'd just smile and pay.

Unless it was after hours there should be no charge.I don't even think there would be one after hours.

I would call it to the attention of Mr. Olive (pronounced Oleeve) as he runs BMV and ask him directly about the charge. He's in the STT BMV.

So did the "supervisor" refund you the $4? Did you have a fully itemized computer generated receipt for $49? Or maybe the $4 cash was for the girls pot:D

There is a schedule of rates on the wall right next to the cashier. Was that charge listed?

I paid an extra fee this year for registration on Stt. I think it was $4 or $5. Plus registration fees went up this year.
I know because I didn't have enough cash on me. I had enough cash from last year's registration fees.
I'll check my receipts to be exact.

Maybe someone could, as suggested earlier, just call Commissioner Olive's office and obtain clarification?

Vehicle Registration Fees

2013
~Annual Registration
$43.00
~Inspection Fee
$10.00
~Total = $53.00

2014
~A.R.
$43.00
~I.F.
$10.00
~General Fund Fees to POTF = $4.00
~Total = $57.00

2015
~A.R.
$48.00
~I.F.
$15.00
~General Fund Fees to POTF = $4.00
~Total = $67.00

As you can see where the BMV added the $4.00 POTF Fee in 2014.
In 2015, vehicle registration increased $5.00 and inspection increased $5.00. Plus the POTF Fee.

Amen to that!

Between the outrageous spending of Mapps and the VI Legislature, well be seeing more increases to fund that spending.

Room Tax just went up to 12.5% from 10%which they raised in 2010 from 8%.

If you're 60 or over you register with the Department of Human Services to receive a senior citizen card which entitles you to many discounts island-wide. You can download the application here:

Yes.
It affords you discounts on registration fee, groceries at Plaza Extra and Pueblo, ferry rides, movies, some drugstores and other places. You have to get used to asking as they don't often post anywhere that discounts are available.

Yes, a 50% discount. Once you register the car with the discount you don't need to present your card again every year as they note it on the registration.

When you get your card (really simple procedure and all done at once) they'll give you a sheet with the up to date listing of businesses which offer the discounts.  One other nice additional bonus is a discount on propane cooking gas. Every little helps!

Not everything is listed on the sheet they give you so it pays to ask.
