Vegetarianism, healthcare-ism, and animals.
Hello!
My partner and I are planning to move to STX in August. We have been doing research like mad but felt we could get better answers from those of you who already live there. A few things:
1. We know there are vegetarian restaurants on the island, but what is the availability of items like tofu and soymilk in the grocery stores? What is the price of tofu, for example? Here in California, it can be from 1.50-3 dollars a block.
2. Does anyone have direct experience with certain healthcare companies and prescriptions? In other words, are prescription drugs for chronic issues affordable and available? Does weather seriously affect the availability of medication? I realize that I need to contact specific companies for pricing but I am concerned about running out and not being able to refill.
3. Can someone provide us with a veterinary contact that they are satisfied with? We have two cats and a dog, and our dog takes daily medication and will for the remainder of her life.
Thanks for your input.

Soy milk and tofu are readily available. $3.00 +/- (probably + , definitely more than 1.50). I have trouble finding the extra firm tofu.
Here's a link to the local phone book. http://www.viphonebook.com
I think pretty much anything mainstream is available here. If it's more exotic, the pharmacy can order it.
Dr. Paul Hess is our vet. Very established, with a faithful following.
for a vet i use dr canton, many people also like dr hess and there is a new one on island but dont know the name or location.
all food prices are higher here than on the mainland so keep that in mind. the quality of fruits and vegis(fresh) are not as good as on the mainland.
for prescriptions we have a card that you can print from the web site but it can only be used at the big k near fredericksted. www.2spendless.com we use it on all of our prescriptions and it really does save money the card is FREE.
I use Dr. Stacia Boswell at the Sugar Mill Veterinary Center. She is awesome and her facility is amazing (it's eco-friendly and very green!) http://www.sugarmillvetcenter.com.
I have no problems finding Tofu, extra firm. It'll run you approx. $3-5. I find it at Plaza Extra.
I have Cigna Health Insurance and have had no problems. Also, if you do the Mail Order, you can get a 3 month supply of most medications for less.
Vegetarian Restaurants - Kalima Center. Really good food, not bad prices. they have lots of raw food items as well. http://www.kalimacenter.org/
There's a Health Food Store by Hovensa - Health Concious. There's also a health food store at 5 Corners, not sure of the name but i've heard good things about them!
I use Dr Casey at Progressive Veterinary. Used him for close to a decade now. He loves the animals, his offices are always clean (he has 2 locations) and he's available 24hr in cases of emergencies. I haven't had to call him often in the middle of the night but when I have he always answered and was pleasant and told me what I needed to do. Can't find a human doctor that will do that! 🙂
Thank you for the answers, everyone!
One specific question for nforbes: Is your health insurance (Cigna) single payer (not via employer or a family plan, etc.)
Thanks again:)
I 2nd Dr Casey at Progressive! Got my stray kitty all fixed up in a day 🙂
Very clean and very nice people!
Cory, did you ever get a dog?
