Vacant/abandoned properties
Has anyone here ever searched for the owner of an abandoned or vacant property? I assume the proper agency to go through would be The Office of the Recorder of Deeds? I'm wondering if there's an efficient online way to do this or if I should do it in person, as I'll be on STX again in a few weeks. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

Wow - that one is amazing Exit Zero - went right to the property I was interested in and the owner is listed!
But yet they still can't find a way to have proper street names and numbers for 911.

None of the names are correct in my immediate neighborhood. Most have owned properties at least 5 years. But new owners are easily found entering IDs into property tax data base.
There are numerous errors in the mapgeo data. The boundaries shown are incorrect. These errors have been reported but are never corrected. It's hit and miss as to the accuracy.
You are better off getting the actual plot data and then looking up the tax records.
Unfortunately the recorder of deeds office will charge you for every single page of records you ask for.

There is no need to go to recorder of deeds - unless you want to research easements. liens and title documents.
The Cadastral office has the maps which can be looked at for free. Simply find the plot number then go to the tax office website to look up owner information.
Hint - it's a great way to find and contact the owner of a property if you want to purchase something that is not listed on the market.

You have to hand over your cell phone upon entry to the LT. Gov's office. I don't see how you could walk in and use a hand held scanner. If you got busted you could be in some serious do-do.
On STX you have to turn in your cell phone where the recorder of deeds office is, in government house. The maps are kept at the lt. Governors building, and there is no security there so you can keep your phone. They are very nice there and a copy of a plot map is relatively cheap.
I've never turned in my cell phone at the record's office here in STT.
You can't take pictures of the huge STT estate map on wall but I've never been asked not to use a scanner or cell to take a pic of a document, or not to write down information. As CI said, a copy of a plot map is pretty cheap. The staff of Recorders Office on STT, I've found to be extremely helpful and very nice to deal with.
In St. Croix, the plot maps are kept at the Office of the Lt. Gov - Tax Assessor & Cadastral office @ 1131 King Street. No photos allowed, you can look at maps, and then get a copy of anything you want for a small fee. Banking and insurance division is also at this location. You can also pay your property taxes here instead of going to VI-BIR in sunny isle.
The Recorder of Deeds office is in the Office of the Lt. Gov (Government House) @ 1105 King Street, which requires you to leave your cell phone when you sign in. This is the same location where you go for business trade names, corporate filings & trademarks, and even if you want to apply locally for a passport.
All the divisions under the LT Gov are considered "Office of the Lt. Gov." which is why there is sometimes confusion as to which location is which. So if someone mentions a department is located at the "Office of the Lt. Gov" you may need to clarify exactly where it is.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming you are a flipper. If so, great, there are a lot of properties that could use fixing up rather than them just sitting there going to seed.

Not sure that someone not yet living here would be thinking of getting into flipping - but one never knows!
I know what you mean OT, but I think they are starting to run out of inventory at least where I'm from probably nothing left to do but go further south.

It's expensive to do a flip here, completely different from states.
Not to mention getting reliable help that show up on time and stay on budget.
Homes tend to stay on market longer, unless exceptional deals, so carrying costs add up.
Gosh no, not a flipper! I've just seen some interesting properties that are vacant that I wish were on the market, and they don't show up in multiple listings. Just looking for a house to actually live in!
Some of those vacant properties might be holiday homes used seasonally, or owned by ex-hovensa workers who are now off island. It's worth tracking down the owners via the tax records and finding out. You never know what deal you may strike.
