Hello

Been looking into chartering a plane out of Fort Lauderdale Florida in mid Sept to bring my dog and I to STX. Cindy refered me to Air Florida who gave me a price of $1200 one way for up to nine people. That is significantly cheaper than the price Cindy said she got but I hope I got it correct. Anyway that is still a bit more than I want to spend so I am hoping there may be a few of you out there with or without pets that may want to take advantage of this. I do not know how much more it would cost to add a stop in St Thomas but if anybody is interested please email me or reply here. As it stands my pooch will be taking a 24 hour tour with no break in his kennel via air cargo so if I could make this work it would mean a lot and maybe, if I got that quote correct, even save a few dollars.

I've just spent 1/2 the day trying to figure out the best way to get myself and my cat from Michigan to St. Thomas this fall. Unfortunately, I don't know if the time will work out. I may not be able to leave until late September. Keep me posted if you secure others or if your date changes.

I lived on STX for a year and flew home every other month to check on my state-side home. I have a 5# poodle that I flew back and forth with me. Her soft-sided carrier fit under the seat in the plane. I was told that it would cost $50 to fly her and I would have to pay before boarding. Her carrier was in plain sight and I never paid to fly her. No one said anything so I didn't either. I had to go to the vet in the states and on the island each time we flew - she had to have a health certificate. Again no one asked for it.

Charlotte,
How much did it cost you each time to have your poodle checked out at the vet on the island? I am just wondering what it would be in comparison to here.

Also, as a side note, I have found that most airlines have carriers to purchase for around $45 that will fit under the seat - plus an extra $80 to fly the pet. For me, I will have to tranquilize my kitty. Either that or bring enough for everyone on the plane!!

First amount is cost here, second is on STX - DHLP $29.00-$35.00, Rabies $14.00-$12.00 (There is (are?) NO rabies on STX), Health Certificate $7.50-$8.00.

As far as carriers go - I had a soft sided carrier for Molli with her name embroidered on the top. It was one I had before going to STX. I didn't have to buy one. If you have a soft-side carrier, that's all you need...unless rules have changed.

My vet here gave told me what to give Molli IF she needed it. I bought some liquid Benadryl but she never needed it. She travels like a pro. I wished I could have given the Benadryl to some kids on the plane but that's another story.

The name of the vet I used in Christiansted was Dr. Paul Hess. The other vet in that same clinic was Dr. Kim Traugott. The name of the clinic is Island Animal Clinic and it's at 5 corners.

If you EVER get lost driving around, you have 2 options: 1)Ask someone where 5 corners is and you can find your way from there or 2) just drive til you see something familiar...the island is not that big.

Seth,
How is your search going getting your dog to USVI? I have an almost 13-year old Golden Retriever and I am dreading having him on a plane in cargo for an extended period of time. we are moving from San Antonio, TX but will probably drive to FL first.

Well it seems Air Florida Isn't such a good choice for chartering a trip to St Thomas.

Cindy called me today to give me a trip report, and it seems her pilot opened the cockpit door over Puerto Rico and said you have two minutes to put on your life jackets we are ditching in the water. It seems he ran the plane out of gas somewhere over Puerto Rico where they were able to glide in and make a safe landing at an airport.

I'd look elsewhere for a charter to the Islands.
