using debit cards for cash back on STJ?
Good afternoon, everyone --
Here in Virginia, I've become accustomed to getting cash back at the grocery store or drugstore -- so I don't have to deal with going to the ATM. I will be on island for 3.5 months this fall and would rather avoid paying ATM surcharges when I need to get cash. (I usually use my Visa card for most transactions anyway, but obviously not everyone accepts plastic.)
Are there any stores on STJ where you can get cash back when you use your debit card? If not on STJ, what about on STT?
Many thanks!
I live on STX,I use my debit card at the post office to get money orders for rent-haven't had any problem. I do get cash back at some stores, but most either don't do cash back,or have a limit-some are $10 cash back-some $50 cash back.
I do not know of any places on STJ. I use HSBC's debit card for getting atm cash. No fees at any atm.
It costs the stores to give you cash back so why not just get an ATM card? There are banks right in Cruz Bay with ATM machines.
Trade, thanks -- in fact, my debit card works as an ATM card. But since my bank isn't local, and I don't want to open a local account for just 3.5 months based on reviews of local banking, I'm looking for a way around paying ATM surcharges ($2.50 to $3 a pop, ouch!) every time I get cash.
Puddlejumper, I've seen you post about HSBC before -- I may have to look into that option. Thanks!
Appreciate the insights, everyone!
You can get cash back at the K-Marts on STT. Also, Scotiabank doesn't seem to charge an ATM fee however your bank will probably charge for using another ATM depending on your account.
I believe Starfish gives cash back.
Ronnie, I will definitely check it out when I arrive next month. Thanks for the tip!
