we've reviewed how much water , gas, etc. costs but still need help on a typical us vi budget (for 1 or 2 people)
here's what we have so far:
we know how much to ship the car
assume rent to be about $1,ooo/month (plus first, last, & deposit)
six months living expenses in bank (we know about it-doesn't mean we have it yet)
where we need help:
monthly budgeted amounts for water, gas, electric, standard cable, dsl or internet through the cable company if available, cell phones (do we need a land line?),food, & misc. trash pickup, mosquito repellent-anything we overlooked thank you for your time-you are why we are drawn to the us vi

If you're talking about St. Thomas:

I have expanded basic cable which runs me $47.41 per month. Take your trash to roadside dumpsters. Here, Innovative has packages for your phone, hi-speed & cable. I don't know what that runs. Don't know what to tell you about food - it depends on what kind of food you like, etc.

Oh, water can vary widely. Depends on what your landlord charges you or whether it's free but you have to split the water delivery charges when you run out. It could run 2 cents to 5 cents a gallon.

Full cable package (all movie channels) runs about $110. Unsure of what satelite cable would be but you would have high set up costs with that.

Which ever type of internet connection you pick will run you about $50 a month (dsl or satelite). Dail up is not terribly reliable here. And there will be set up costs about $100 to $250 depending on which way you go.

Cell phone is like stateside...depends on what plan you want for what you will pay a month.

Gas is about $70 a tank but generally gas is just for your stove here.

Electric can varily wildly. Alot of that will depend on what applicances you use. How many/much you use your refrigerator, washer/dryer etc. You could be looking anywhere from $70 to $400. Its just me and my husband but we tend to be on the higher end of that scale.

I would highly recommend a land line but plenty of people do without it. See how well your reception works on your sell phone when you find your island home. Again if you choose dsl internet you will need a land line. About $35 more or less for a land line.

Food is going to vary according on what you like to eat and how often you eat out. Someone else may have a better estimate for you. For us its between $80 to $150 a week. Food is more expensive. Of coarse it all depends where you are coming from.

Most bars/restaurants have repellant and you shouldnt need it at the beach. But its not like you are going to need a ton of it. They almost never bother me so a can can last me 6 months to a year.

Trash pickup for me has ranged between $30 to $45 a month.

Hey Betty
I do need repellents at the BEACH. Sand fleas and no seeums attack me all times of day and night on the beach so right along with my sunscreen I use a bug repellent. But you are right just go to the corner store to get a can once in a while. No big deal.

buggy
I would still trade all the buggies in China for not having to shovel three feet of snow at a time

What island are you talking about, shawno? On STT I have dial-up that's very reliable. That can vary by area.

Mine's much more reliable now that they had to replace a cable on my road. Sure speeded things up a bit. I just hate to pay out more money to Innovative for high-speed.

halawest

thanks for sharing some numbers
haven't committed to an island but leaning towards STX
I'm a wrek trying to figure how many jobs I'll need just for monthly expenses
toying with the idea of putting off a move so I can work practically around the clock here, saving more of a down payment, therefore, not stressing as much monthly (with the limited availability of high paying jobs there)
