does stx have any unions? the reason i ask is i am in the carpenters union here in michigan and wondered if it would help finding a job. its hard to find much info on the net only thing i could find is a labor union address on the net but no web site or what trades they represented. thanks for any help with this matter.

Why don't you ask at your union local if they have a local in the VI? Seems they would be in a good position to help you figure it out.

already tried that . good idea though .it seem like that would work because we are an "international union" but locals dont do much leg work for you if it does not benefit that local, due to the fact that we are all divided into different states. and so is the money . i guess ill have to come down and do the leg work myself or organize the labor and start a new local!

There are enough unions in the VI for every man, woman and child to belong to two or more.

you probably haven't found anything online about them because the majority of island businesses don't have an online presence. Also, most of the union members would be local islanders and they may not be advertising to attract mainland additions to their unions.

Plus the unions aren't here like regular unions, they are here to harass government and private enterprises. Imagine, Steelworkers Union representing hotel employees? It's a stretch. You may be able to join that for what's it worth but most carpenters have to get their own licenses to work as independent contractors. So, you are your own boss!

thanks for the info. i know unions are not the answer for everything, they do seem to help up here, but thats not to say they are the only way to help workers.sounds like all you people do is fight the government and complain how bad it is there. I am not attacking anyone personally, you are very kind to take time to answer my question, its just if you read most of the QA's it does not give one a very nice idea of your islands.i realize it is different there in many ways . i know you are just trying to help people understand how it works there , i guess its just sad that it really is worst there then most people have it in the states. i lived in mexico for 3 years and dont regret it a bit . and i think if mexico changed and was like the usa it would not be mexico anymore. probably the same as your islands take it or leave it.
