Type 1 Diabetes and St. Croix

Forgot this important note from my first post.... Sorry.

I am a Type 1 Diabetic who uses and insulin pump. How easy would it be to get prescription(s) on St. Croix for my Humalog Insulin and Freelance Test Strips for my meter ( to monitor my blood sugar)? Also, how easy is it to see a doctor (of any kind)?
Do companies offer health insurance for permanent employees?

I don't know if this is important, but my pump is called the Omnipod and is from a company called Insulet.

Any and all information will be appreciated.

Thanks! 🙂

If you don't get direct answers from this forum, then maybe call some pharmacies here? And ask about prices. It ain't cheap here.

Here are a few:
Golden Rock 340-773-7666
Diamond 340-719-4626
Doctor's Choice 340-719-1922 or 340-778-2266

Thanks, again, STXBob.

I will give those numbers a call and see what I can find out.

You are greatly appreciated!

You could also look into having your supplies mailed to you. There are lots of big companies out there that do it fairly cheaply. Of course, you'd have to do some research on who ships to the VI and what they charge!

I filled a prescription (though not for insulin) during my PMV, and it was a lot cheaper and easier than I expected. I went to the pharmacy in Sunny Isle (can't remember what it was called). They took my insurance and filled it right there while I waited for about 10 minutes or so. That was in the middle of the day, midweek... maybe it's different at 5:15 on a Friday!

I'm not sure what to tell you to expect overall, but for what it's worth, my job on STX will include health insurance coverage.

Hi Roadrunner,

Thanks for the information.

Do you mind me asking what your job on STX is.. and are they hiring? 🙂

Also, I have been told the post office is a good place to work and that the pay and benefits are great. Do you think that is a possibility for me? Just curious.

I have been hearing that if one has trouble getting doctors or prescriptions in St. Croix, an option would be to take a ferry to Puerto Rico. Have you heard of this and is it a good idea?

Sorry if these are silly questions but just trying to get all options.

Thanks!

No ferry from STX to PR. Don't know who you have been hearing from about Doctors and Prescriptions?

There are lots of doctors and pharmacies on STX. There are lots of flights to PR. Sometimes people fly to PR or Miami or elsewhere for advanced medical care. I'd guess that 99% of all medical care can be handled competently on STX.

They're hiring if you're trained in the medical field!

Hi Roadrunner...

No, unfortunately not. My field is more computer related. However, I am a quick learn! I can learn anything... as we all can. Keep that in mind. Or, if there is a "starting" position and I can move up from there... that is not a problem either.

I did ask my job if there is a way I could telecommute and because we deal with a lot of "personal information", they say it would be too much of a "security" issue. I can understand that, but come on, I have been with this company for 2.5 years! Oh well, at least I asked.

🙂

I don't know where you currently get your prescriptions filled, but CVS delivers here for free and even to a P.O. Box!
