Two Manatee Lost in St. Croix Waters
Poor things!! I hope they are rescued soon, and survive.
interesting, i didnt know the needed fresh water. ive only seen them in salt water
In FLA they go up the Homasossa River, an estuary which changes from salt water to fresh water as it moves inland, they also drink fresh water. They will not do good down here.
I hope they can rescue and relocate them safely.
interesting, ive only seen them in the keys and just didnt know this . thank you

Article says last reported sighting was in Altona Lagoon. I've often wondered if the lagoon is any good for snorkeling? I've seen a lot of small fish just looking along the shoreline.

Probably searching for fresh water. Is the lagoon brackish or pure sea water?

Altona Lagoon Brackish.
There is also fresh water / brackish flowing into the ocean when we have normal rains at:
- Salt River
- Green Cay Marina
- Great Pond
so theoretically we should be able to support a Manatee colony.....if we have normal rain. We certainly have plenty of sea grass.
