Two educated people that need jobs
Hello. We've been on the island for about 2 months and are still looking for good jobs. I am a certified music teacher and he is an ecologist with a masters degree. I'm interested in teaching beginning string instruments in a class setting or privately. He would like to be involved in a an environmental project and get paid for it. He is also interested in working on farms, etc. Any ideas?
I would check with the University for your husband. Advertise your music lesson in the VI daily. Go from there. I would also go to places which sell instruments. It can't hurt to leave your business card and a flyer with them.
Good Luck
Iris
Dear Veryaud,
Iris had good advice for you. You might also check out Tillett Gardens for directions towards musical opportunities and also the Reicchold Center. Both may be able to give you some leads.
Your husband might want to look for leads in ecology and environmental projects via Maho Bay on St. John.
Two other things to consider.
The jobs you are seeking are a little outside the norm. Finding them will require more searching and networking than a service or office job. And STJ/STT is a small place, maybe 60,000 people total. Are there actually these kinds of jobs being done now? You should try hooking up with people in the same field.
Secondly, businesses get a tax break for hiring residents (people who have resided on-island for more than one year), If you are getting interviews and not being hired, that may be the reason.
Many people just moving here take any job they can find to start out. Once you're working it's easier to find other job oppurtunities. It is easier to find a job than make a living.
Ric and I moved here 2 years ago in slow season, August. It took him until Thanksgiving to find something. He worked at it for about 18 months and was offered a job he really likes at a better salary by the same company.
Good Luck.
We are in STX.
