Agreed that the 25% is the same as the Military Variable Housing Allowance. The Cola is on the base pay (cost of living allowance) The 25% local percentage remains the same but the dollar amount goes up based on higher base pay due to the increase in the cola.

Yes and it is important to remember that COLA is not part of base salary and not taxable. Again, it is on top of salary.

No the cola increases the base salary and it is taxable, the increase on the Local allowance is not taxable. The cola adjustment is the same as longevity increases on the base, anything that increases the base salary is taxable.

No the cola is a cost of living increase seperate from the 25% Local allowance. Last year the cola for social security was 5.87%. That percentage would be times you base salaryThe TSA base salary is 31,426. PA so the cola would be 31,426 X 5.87=1,844.70 so the new base salary would be 33,270.70 This amount is taxable. Now the local payment at 25% is now7856. but with the new base amount of 33,270.70 X .25=8,317.68 PA The 8,317.68 is not taxable. The cola increases the base pay taxable. the Local allowance percentage stay's at 25% but it is times the new amount of base pay which makes the allowance higherand not taxable.

Ok, once again, lets not confuse the COLA...Cost of Living Allowance, with, the the cost of living increase.....Cola is a non taxable allowance paid to federal employees, assigned to many areas including the territory, which is paid IN ADDITION TO THEIR SALARY, Cost of living increase, is an increase based on inflation, approved by congress and signed by the president every year. I guess I can't argue this forever. so I will just say. if the COLA is taxable, me and my colleagues have been doing things very wrong, for a very long time, you should report us to the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) who also receives the COLA (tax free). I am sure they will straighten it out....Lizard, you are obviously not, a federal employee. Not trying to be mean...or disrespectful, but you are obviously not in tune with the facts here.
Anyway, to those of you who are looking to join TSA, the salary posted, is in addition to, a 25% tax free COLA. Regardless of your status as a federal employee. Its the law......Oh, period.

Not in tune, maybe the numbers confused you, the 25% is not taxable no argument there. Like you said it was like the "Military Variable Housing Allotment" which is the Military Variable Housing Allowance, I didn't jump on your bones for that little faux Pas, I even broke it down for you. The Cola you refer to is for "local allowance" which i stated more than once. I also referred to the SS COLA based on the consumers price index and how it relates to base pay so any reader would not be confused. Maybe you have been working for the Govt Too Long. Oh I forgot the salary Posted on the announcement is the Full time Salary very important "another faux pau Jay."

Don't get excited. The listed pay is for FULL TIME positions.

Read the related information and you'll find:

"OTHER INFORMATION:
The salary range listed is for a full-time position. If you are
applying to a part-time position, your salary will be pro-rated
based upon the actual number of hours worked."

There are many qualifiers and disqualiiers so be sure to read ALL of the documentation first.

And good luck to all who do apply.

Found out that Customs and Border Protection is getting an across the board raise. Up to a GS-12 now, I think. Like 60k a year base, not counting automatic COLA, locality pay and overtime they work. That could amount to another 25-30k on top.

I don't know if TSA is getting a raise or if they'll follow. I don't think that they are in the same pay scale.

Never better time to be a Fed.

If ya can`t beat `em, join `em.
But who is going to pay for `em?
Many small businesses may take their marbles elsewhere to play as it may become to oppressive to play here!

Answer to PM's:

Yes, they can make up to 90k if they are willing to work the overtime.
You can find a government job at usajobs.gov.

I still haven't found out if TSA will get a pay increase. They normally only work part time so I kinda doubt it.

Who pays the government? I think we all do.
