Just a heads up to everyone to keep an eye on newly formed TS Tomas. http://www.stormcarib.com

It is currently forecast to pass south of us but we could still get some weather from him. Remember there are still 30 days before hurricane season is over!

From VITEMA

VITEMA Continues to Monitor Hurricane Tomas

At 11 a.m. the National Hurricane Center upgraded Tropical Storm Tomas to a Category 1 hurricane with its center packing 75 miles per hour maximum sustained winds. Hurricane force winds extended out 25 miles and tropical force winds up to 175 miles.

Tomas is currently located at about 400 miles of St. Croix and is tracking west northwest at 15 miles per hour. On its current track, Tomas is expected to pass well south of St. Croix, however, the island will continue to experience rainfall and gusty winds associated with the outer rain bands of this system.

According the National Weather Service, by 5 p.m. today, a high surf advisory may be issued for St. Croix due to breaking wave action associated with the system, as well as with a tropical storm warning for the Caribbean waters surrounding St. Croix.

Hurricane Tomas is also forecasted to bring frequent showers and gusty winds to the island of St. Croix beginning about midnight Sunday through the early morning hours of Monday. Tomas is not expected to impact St. Thomas or St. John with significant rains or winds.

VITEMA urge residents, especially mariners and beach-goers, to monitor local media and VI Alert for updates and advisories on Hurricane Tomas. All severe weather advisories for the Virgin Islands will be issued via VI Alert’s mass alert and notification system.

The track shows it heading straight for Haiti with landfall as a Cat 2. This could be catastrophic, as hundreds of thousands are still living in tents from the earthquake. The situation in Haiti is already very bad. Cape Air did relief flights to Haiti after the earthquake, so some of our pilots have seen the devastation first hand. Pray for a change in track.
