Trouble with AT&T Wireless reception?
Lately it seems that AT&T has gone away. I now get 1, or if I am lucky 2 bars where I always had 5! Almost every call gets dropped! Anyone else experiencing this BAD service? I am on St. Croix.
Everything is fine with my phone on the east end of STX.
Jim
I've had no problems with my AT&T service. What you are describing is what happened to my Motorola Razer right before it died on me. I kept losing calls and getting low signals. I'm not saying your phone is dying just that that is what happened to me.
We have been having problems with AT&T for months. From mid-island to the West end. Will have 5 bars and then it drops to 0. The calls drop too. Also having problems with text messaging and voice mail. It can be 2 days before the messages are delivered to my phone.
Spotty here too, east end. It drops out but not for long.
My AT&T reception has been OK. It was never stellar, but I haven't noticed it getting any worse anywhere.
We're mid lsland near Cane Bay and we haven't seen any change in service.
Since moving here in Jan 2007, I would not having anything but AT&T wireless service since I call the States far more than local calls. AT&T has the most complete coverage on STX of any wireless carrier. However there are a lot of "dead zones" where you get zero bars. For example we live in Cane Bay and the "phone booth" for reception/sending is at Off The Wall -east side or just across the road in the vacant lot. Another "phone booth" is in Rowdy Joe's parking lot . It's just another reality you have to live with here..
Just tried to reply to a text message on my AT&T phone. I had 5 bars and when I went to send my reply it read "no service available". I went to a location at my house where I know I have cell phone service, had 5 bars and tried to make a call. Got the same message "no service available". My service has gotten worse lately. I have a new phone I got 1 month ago so I know it's not my phone.
Don't forget to shut your phone off and restart it every few weeks. When a node of the network gets upgraded or hardware gets replaced, a phone reboot can make all the difference.
I am glad to see it is not just me! I have turned the phone off and on with no apparent difference. I have a phone that has worked perfectly for a year with no problems. I heard today that AT&T is working on some problems on island with a cell tower. I sent an email to customer service to complain about the reduction of availability of signal. It will be interesting to see the response. Stay tuned!
i dont have the same service i had with sprint. when i make calls people say its not as clear as sprint. i wish i had stayed with my sprint service but att had more to offer.
now stuck for two years.
I wonder if that is what's wrong with my ATT 3G wireless for my netbook. I keep getting the "no available bearer" when I try to use it. Called ATT. They say it's not them... no problems on STX. *-)I wonder....
Stxnama,
I think I am experiencing the same problem, seems like a very specific change in coverage.
It's like there is a new dead area along the north shore between Morningstar and Princess. Used to be 3-5 bars, then about a week ago down to 0-1 bars -- does that sound like what's happening to you? Can't hold a conversation without major dropping, where I previously was able to do so quite well, for long calls.
The rest of the island, good coverage as usual, with the same old known dead spots.
(Yes, I have restarted cell phone multiple times and even and switched SIM card to different phones, all have the same problem this week in this one geographic area for AT&T.)
Interesting that you mention from Morningstar to Princess. I was driving that way the other day and talking to my husband (using a bluetooth!) and told him I'd call him back when we got cut off - because I always loose signal there. I was amazed that we were able to continue our conversation the whole way to Lorraine without getting cut off.
Amazing! After pablum response to my email, I decided to spend most of yesterday trying to get through to AT&T and managed to get a VERY wonderful customer service rep named Melissa (who by the way was born on STX but moved mainland when small). After she had to call me back several times due to dropped calls, she tried everything she could do and then forwarded me to a "tech" person. That person admitted there had been several calls from this area and said they would report a "tower" problem and contact me within 72 hours. Lo and behold!!!!!! this morning I have 5 bars again and can make calls without them being dropped! It took over 3 hours of standing firm on my switching to Sprint if something wasn't done, but the old saying about the gate that squeaks seemed to get results! For how long.........who knows!
on the subject of switching to Sprint...how is Sprint service in STX? also does the 3G/4G wireless internet access work down in STX?
I had Sprint and it was so bad I switched to AT&T (which is great).
I had Sprint, and now I have AT&T. They both suck. Or I should say, I live in and frequently visit areas with no service, i.e. the north shore on STX. Maybe they shold install off-shore cell towers. After all, everybody makes sure they have a view of the water, not a view of the mountain top.
AT&T launched their Femtocell device nationwide. It plugs into your high-speed Internet at home (Broadband VI of course 🙂 and allows you to use your cell phone within 40ft of the device. This is just what you folks in Cane Bay, Caret Bay, South Slob, Mahogany Run(north side), Butler Bay, Solitude, and other areas that have poor cell coverage need:

ATT calls it "microcell" ...but their website says it's not available yet on StX.

Last week suddenly back to 5 bars with AT&T, all the maddening problems gone.
STXNAMA - if it was your calls to AT&T that fixed it, I thank you. I might even owe you a drink!
still having problems with it saying mergency calls only, lack of bars etc.
I've had problems with mine for a long time. Various areas east to mid-island. Part of it might be my pay as you go phone but it's very annoying.
