triathlon training in virgin islands?
*I am currently a student at the University of Alberta (canada) in animal Biology and am considering attending the University of the Virgin Islands as an international student. I am just wondering about the road systems - are they cycling-friendly? For example, can people get in good road cycling or are the road really narrow with busy traffic?
Hello Tammy,
Which island will you be attending UVI on St. Thomas or St. Croix?
St. Thomas: UVI is out on the west end - doesnt get as much traffic as other areas of the island. The road if flat for a bit from the entrance to the campus down to the beach Brewers Bay then its up hill toward the west/northwest parts of the island. My car (old car) has difficulty getting up that hill. People walk it for excercise - so if you can bike it for training you will definietely be strong!! 🙂 I suppose you could also bike around the campus itself - the roads are hilly but not terriably steep.
On St. Croix - there is a half-man triatalon there each year so if you are attending the university on that island well you could practice on the same route that they use for the compeition. You can read more about that at

Tammy:
In my opinion you really can't ride a road bike on either St Thomas or St Johns. The hills are steep, the roads are narrow , windy and drivers can't see you because they are driving on the left side of the road in cars not set up for that.
The only opportunity for serious road biking I could see would be on St Croix.
