Triathalon's...

So I've been injured forever, and once I arrive on the rock I plan on resuming my triathalon training. Is there a good beach that I can swim (laps) at?
Also I've a road bike that I use for racing... I know biking is not the easiest thing to do on STT but if I take it over to the park in St. John would it be feasible to ride there?
Finally beach jogging... Is there a place that I could go running after a swim? I know beaches tend to be smaller, but still...
Okay - that's it for this time around!! 🙂

Thanks all!

You picked the wrong island for triathlons, running and biking.

St Croix hosts five triathlons including a world famous half Ironman. In addition there are approximately twenty bike races a year with as many as fifty racers showing up for an event.

Good luck!

Okay - I'll have to go over sto STX for the races. 🙂 Anyone have experience on sending road bikes and yourself via ferries from STT to STX?
I will however be employed on STT - so I'll just have to find a way to practice there. 🙂 (I've heard the diving is better in STX too but can't do much about that either.) 🙂

Magen's is great for swimming and running. The beach is 3/4 of a mile long, you can swim uninterrupted forever. Also, the roads around Magens and Peterborg (out to the point) are less traveled, smooth, not hilly and ideal for biking as well. A one stop shop 🙂

Icy: There is a triathalon group on St Thomas. If you check at Caribbean Surf Co., Janelle is one of the big bikers. There are people who swim at Magens and there is a 10K loop out Magens-Peterborg.

Getting back and forth between STT & STX is not convenient nor is it cheap. Triathlons and bike races start early on Sunday mornings at 7 AM so you will have to travel on Saturday. The ferry schedule is minimal and not that cheap. Flying gives you a lot a flexibility nut it will cost you $100 - $150 round trip.

Be sure to sign up for the 2011 STX Half Ironman to be held on the first Sunday of May. The fields fill up quickly.

Okay, I'm desperate to ask those who know. I own a Giant Avail Advanced 1. A very serious road bike. I love my bike and where I currently live have even done a mountainous century ride.
Please help.
1. If my bike was stolen I could in all reality never afford to replace it. The TEVA games are held here so my bike is a standard here not an exception.
2. Is there really a place where I can realistically ride?
3. What about in the park on St John?
4. Can you - and for how much - ferry yourself and a bike between Red Hook and St John?
I truly appreciate your candor!

In other words:
Do I or do I NOT bring the bike?

Not familiar with cycling on STT or SJU have ridden only on STX and Water Island.

However if you do bring it you will need to adapt the gearing. Use a compact double with a 27 or 28 tooth cog in the rear.

If the bike has a steel frame leave it home.

Icy:

You can ride here on STT- you just have to pick your times and pick your roads.

There is a group that leaves from Greenhouse every Sunday @ 5:30 and rides for about 2 hours. They also ride for about an hour a couple times a week on the Northside, to get a good hill workout in.

I have ridden in the afternoons here on Sunday before and while there are plenty of cars around, they are usually respectful when they see you out on the road.

For running: from Yacht Haven to UVI is about 4 miles I believe and about half of it is on the apron on the waterfront- a good, flat place to run uninterrupted. For track workouts- the CHarlotte Amalie high school has a decent track that you can use at night without much interruption from walkers/other people. The lights also stay on there until well into the night.

For swimming- the pool in Nazareth @ the St. Thomas swimming association has MAsters swimming Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights from 6-7:30 pm. Otherwise, it's open water swimming at Lindquist or at Magens.

I would suggest getting a trainer for your bike so you can do some rides indoors if you are serious about training here. I ride once a week outside, and that's only on Sundays, just because I don't have enough time otherwise. All my other rides are on the trainer.

If you really want to do it- you can.
