Traveling with a pet

Hi Everyone,

I wondered if anyone had any tips/suggestions about making the big move with pets.

I have a 16 year old indoor cat who is in generally good health, but quite timid around new people and situations. Because of the logistics of our move, he will need to travel with us for about 2 days by car before getting on the plane with us in Florida for a nonstop flight to STT.

The move will be quite traumatic for him and there is just no way in getting around that. However, any tips or suggestions as to how I might make it a little less so would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks 🙂

Mell

Mell-

Petsmart and some other places have a natural herbal medication called Rescue Remedy that will help calm your pet without any type of pharmaceutical sedatives. You might try it one day before you are gong to leave just to see how he does. I don't know if he likes kitty toys, but if so, put some of those in the crate with him. Freeze a small container of water and put it in the crate as well for the long flight - it will thaw slowly and allow him to have water without as much mess if you don't think it's a good idea to open the carrier door on the flight. Petsmart also has some "non-spill" types you can get.

Pets do better than one might think - I had a 14-year-old large breed dog that I was so worried about, and she probably did better than most.

Good luck to you!

Hi Becky,

Thank you so much for the excellent advice. I have been advised by my vet to avoid the use of sedatives if at all possible, because of my cat's age. I have never heard of the herbal sedative you mentioned and it sounds like it might be quite helpful. I also have never heard of, or seen a "non-spill" water container. Sounds great. I take a trip out to Petsmart this weekend.

I very much appreciated you sharing the story about your dog with me. I will keep my fingers crossed that things turn out as well for us.

Thanks again 🙂
