Travel from STX to PR
I was just wondering how realistic it is to travel between St Croix and Puerto Rico within the same day? I figure that flying is the fastest/cheapest route, but am I wrong in that assumption? Is this something that people do fairly regularly? Does anyone have any info they could give on what a typical ticket would cost to fly from STX to PR? Thank you!
Seaborne, Cape Air and other airlines have regular flights between the two and by air is the only option available. If by "regularly" you mean as a daily commute, that would be a "no".
Haha no definitely wasn't insinuating a daily commute, that sounds a little crazy. I just have a situation with a pet and my current vet has a location on PR so depending on the cost I'm considering if I should keep my plan with them or not.
Thank you for the response!
My pet required surgery which only could be performed in PR.
She was 60lbs at the time and I flew over with her on Seabourne seaplane. Luckily, I had family in PR to stay with for a couple of days while she had the surgery and recovered enough to travel back to STT.
You may wish to call them and check on their best fares.
Another poster, AandA2 has mentioned low fares that become available with them back and forth between STT and STX.
Don't know if they have similar between STX and PR.
Good luck with your pet.
If your pet plan coverage extends to PR you'll really have to figure out travel costs and stress to the pet and compare to vet charges here to determine whether or not it balances out. To the best of my knowledge we don't have any sort of pet insurance coverage here (you should check further into that) but we do have good vets and I'm sure you can easily get recommendations on who to see on STX. Unless your pet has very special needs which can't be treated here, so much easier all around to have him/her taken care of close to home.
I considered retaining our Pet Smart plan when I found out they were in PR, until I did the math and logistics. I decided it wasn't worth the money, or the stress (on me or the dog), especially if your pet is ill and you need emergency or follow-up appointments.
i have heard, not sure if true or not, that seaborne does not have early flights anymore. cape air might.
if you can get an early flight-it is doable. many people from stx go to puerto rico for medical and fly back and forth in one day.
i would not want to do it on a regular basis
not sure what the typical cost is as we get reduced rate for medical from the insurance company
Its hard to count on Seaborne these days. They're really bleeding financially and the mass layoffs have noticeably affected their service levels. Chances are good one or both of your flights will be delayed or cancelled and don;t count on your baggage getting there on the same flight you're on.
you can do plane side bag check with seaborne on the way there
My pup's problem was diagnosed by local 2 vets that I trusted.
They consulted with each other.
They could not perform the required surgery and recommended the vet in PR that did the surgery which was complex and successful.
I would imagine it depends on the complexities of the surgery as to how you decide to proceed.
Honestly, whatever it takes, I will make sure that my animals, whom I've been lucky enough to have enrich my life and make me laugh on a daily basis, deserve the best care and I'll figure out how to accomplish that.
I tried to get Pet Insurance years ago but it wasn't available here.
Things might finally be changing but haven't looked into it as heading off island with all dogs, before the year is out.
Good luck!
