Trapjaw ants
Has anyone seen these ants on STX. We found some while cleaning up our coconut palms. Nasty creatures and very large.

Yikes. Hopefully JJ didn't fill his pockets and bring them inside to play!
Yes, we've seen them more and more on the east end this year. My first encounter with them was in Judith's Fancy back in 1994 or so. Ouch.
Good googlie mooglie, I hate the ones that can jump! I had to look it up so I'd know what it was.
No Alexandra. Thank God he doesn't do that anymore! He and Doug did put some in a specimen jar that has a magnifying glass as a lid so they could look at it up close.
eiplanner, we watched that video too.
i got bit by something that felt like i was stabbed with a hot poker when i was at the whim last. i did not see what it was but was told it was an ant. hurt and was swollen for a day.
Might have been a centipede.
that is a possiblity, never thought of that as i did not see the darn thing.

It might have been fire ants http://www.fcla.edu/FlaEnt/fe89p431.pdf
We have been attacked several times by fire ants. The worst was when we stepped on an ant hill at the Reef Golf course. They swarmed out and chewed up our feet and ankles. Painful, but no long term problems.
I often get bit by fire ants. It hurts a little if it is one or two, then it itches afterwards. Centipedes and jack Spaniard wasps hurt a lot more and hurt for a few hours, sometime followed by swelling. I got bit by one or the other and had to go to the hospital. They gave me antibiotics and steroids. It was probably a centipede. My arm swelled to twice it's size and I have never been allergic to bees or wasps. I have been stung several times by the jack spaniard wasp and it hurt for quite a while but no swelling.
Wow I played with the little centipedes here in Virginia as they dont bite. You must have some badass ones there......LOL
Freefreq, we are from Virginia as well. We were back there for a while this year and my son discovered centipedes in the yard. He jumped back and screamed,"LOOK OUT! Baby centipedes. There is a momma around somewhere."
Danger...Will Robinson...Danger!!!!
Do NOT play with the centipedes on St Croix - it will probably be an ER visit - the little ones are pretty painful too!!!
Just a word to the wise on insect bites in general - many of the stinging, biting poking things like wasps etc are capable of infecting the "wound" with some pretty nasty bacteria along with their chemicals.
My mother had to go to the hospital 3 days after a simple old wasp sting - for blood poisoning!!! Not fun.
Keep an eye on stuff like that!
speedy i sat on a pede once and didnt see it. butt swelled, butt i know that has to be what it was. (it now has 1,000 broken legs):D
dixie, poor poor centipede. lol.
