*Am helping a friend who wants to take his staffordshire terrier to St. Thomas on a visit to see his mother. Airlines do not offer cargo service into St. Thomas but can get him as far as San Juan. Dog has all shots and certificates required by airlines for transport (under 6 months of age and less than 20 pounds). Is it possible to transport a kenneled animal on scheduled ferry service between San Jaun and St. Thomas? If yes, how can we get copy of this spring's schedule and tarifs (want to travel around 01April, will return at end of that month). Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello Marsha,

(Onika please help with this one. You have become the expert of Dog transportation to the USVI)

Seems like 20 pounds you could bring the dog with you if you got a straight flight to St. Thomas rather then a connection in San Juan. Straight flights are offered, American has from certain cities. Search this message board, I posted Americans regulations for transporting animals a couple weeks ago, also Onike posted a lenghtly post about transportation of dogs, as she did this with hers last year.

Go to the top of this page, before the post start there is a search option, search for dogs several post with this information come up.

The reasons why I ask:
1. If your friend can take him by hand, it will avoid all hassles with cargo restrictions.
2. Soem airlines have cargo restrictions specific to breed. Unfortunately, the staffordshire terrier is on the restricted list for many airlines. (Although I would argue it is undeserved). I don't recall American having breed restrictions and they fly do directly into St Thomas from many Eastern cities--so if he can not fit in a hand carrier, try cargo on American or other airline.
Hint: Is your friend's dog a mix? If so, I would play up the other half. That is, rather than being a Staffordshire Terrier X, perhaps he could highlight his labrador lineage. thus, he is a Labrador X.

Islander: It is rather ironic that I have become the dog transportation "expert." We've been having trouble with her this past weekend with Tick Fever. Aargh. very scary.

i know some of the smaller commuter airlines that fly between san juan and stt also accept pets, even when the bigger airlines will not.
good luck!

I knew of one that shipped the dog with Four Star Cargo out of Miami. Picked him up the next day!

How do I find times and is it from Fijardo?
As to the dog with tick fever.
use doxycycline 5 to 10mg/kg every 12 hours for a minimun of 60 days especially if he is positive with a blood test.
ehrlichia, Im guessing they dont have rmsf in caribbean?
