Transporting Liquor On Connecting Flights
Has anyone lost their liquor purchases in St Thomas in transport ? I have a connecting flight from St. Thomas
to New York in a few weeks and am concerned it may not make home with me. Can the liquor be put into a checked suitcase or does it have to go on the plane separately?
Liquor must be checked. You can pack it in suitcases or in boxes, just like you would anything else you check. Most people don't have any problems with breakage or loss.
Thanks for the response. I think I'll pack it in my suitcase.
We've done both.....packed in suit case and the six pack box (and box in suit case, too).
Last trip (October 2007) we packed a 6 bottle box in a suit case....we cushioned all the bottles (top, bottom and sides) and cushioned the box itself. Upon arriving one bottle was broken. It appears that during the customs inspection in St. Thomas they un-did my great packing job and placed one of the bottles upside down in the box without replacing the packing material. Needless to say the bottle broke.
We have shipped liquor back from STT many times (both on non-stop and connecting flights) and this is the first time we had a problem.
On a funnier side.......I shipped a six pack of pineapples back from Hawaii several years ago. When arriving at my destination I noticed that the box had been opened and a pineapple was missing. I went to the baggage claim area to report the problem. The agent took down the information and then offered me a $50. travel certificate for my inconvenience. Upon accepting the certificate I looked down at the box of pineapples and then asked the agent if he would like to buy the other 5.......(lol).

Just realize that the airlines are getting very stingy with luggage and weight allowances. Bottles packed in bags can make them pretty heavy. Yup....I had to fork over $25 to American a couple of years ago.
Yeah, they are getting really stingy. I think in May both United and U.S. Air will allow only ONE checked bag per passenger. You'll have to pay an extra $25 for any additional bags each way on your round trip itinerary.
The US Airways fee applies to flights within the United States, and to and from Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. United's policy does not apply to itineraries that include international flights, except those to Canada.
Bright spot--if you're a preferred member then you and members of your party are exempt.
I've shipped half my household using the baggage allowance--even the super duper weed whacker we disassembled and placed in the luggage. (Tip--they only took it because it was brand new and had never contained gasoline or oil.)

Another option is, if you buy your liquor in the duty free shop in PR while awaiting the connecting flight and do not leave the secured area you can carry your liquor purchase on board your flight. However they do not sell cruzan rum. It costs a little bit more (not much) and no hassle or breakage . You only have to show your boarding pass that shows your returning to the mainland.
