transportation..STX
I will be moving to Chriatiansted in the next couple of weeks to take a seasonal job for 4 months and am curious about transportation. Is there any buse service, or do I have to buy/rent a car? Is the island bikable if I am trying to get from the Buccaneer to Christansted daily? Is it worth shipping my bicycle? Also-any areas of the island that you recommend NOT looking for an apartment in (unsafe areas)?
Karina:
The mileage from the Buccaneer to Christiansted is short so biking is a possibility. St Croix is the most bikeable island in the USVI however there are limitations.
1. Many roads are narrow and lack shoulders. Roads tend to wind about.
2. People drive on the left hand side in cars designed for driving on the right. This limits driver's sight lines particularly on left hand curves. You also have tourists who aren't familiar with driving on the left renting cars and driving around the island. No telling where they will be on the road sometimes.
3. There are many long steep hills on St Croix. I would recommend a bike with triple front chain rings. If you only want to ride from your job to town you probably could get by with only double front chain rings.
4. The roads are poorly lighted so under no circumstances would I ever ride after dark.
As for shipping a bike to St Croix it will could be expensive. The post office won't take a bike in a bike box as mail. If you can break the bike down into a small package or packages so then you can send the bike by Priority Mail . It will cost you approx $2.00 a pound including insurance to ship using priority mail. If you ship the bike by UPS they will treat it as an international air package and charge in the neighborhood of $200 for delivery. Another option is to ship the bike to a freight consolidator in Florida who will load it on a boat. They charge by the cubic foot plus other fees.
Check with Endurance Sports in Christiansted to see what they would charge you for a new bike. It might be simplier if not cheaper.

Jim has given you good advice. You can bike St Croix, but it requires a certian amount of daring. The ride from Buccaneer to Chriatiansred is short and easy, but "narrow" with few shoulders. However St Croix hosts a world class triathalon, so there are many bike riders on the island. You should contact a bike shop such as Endurance Sports in Sunny Isle.
( endurancesportsvi.com ) You could maybe buy a newer bike for the shipping cost.. Give them a call.
There is a "regular" bus that goes out East end road and connects Christiansted with the Buccaneer and points east.
Renting a car is very expensive,,maybe $900 per month. You can buy "island cars" for a couple thousand, but buyer beware....
I perfer living on the east end, but there are many very nice and "cheaper" options just west of Christiansted.
