I understand there is no ferry between STX and STT. What do people do if they "commute"? do some people just drive a boat to work? is that practical? I gotta know!!

Basically, people do not comute between St Thomas and St Croix. It's too darn far. When people need to go to a meeting, etc. they usually take the seaplane.

How far is too darn far? I think its only a 40 mile jaunt. How much does a sea plane cost?

That 40 miles by ferry takes at least 90 minutes and a lot of fuel, and often costs you your lunch. . The seaplane is about $100 RT.

The ferry runs $90 RT and around 90 minutes. You can get the sea plane (18 minutes) from about $140 up t0 $180 RT. Commercial rate is about $135 RT

"Only" 40 miles...of open ocean. I haven't been on the ferry, but legend has it they pass out the barf bags up front...

It is very rough, so if you get seasick early you definitely will need the barf bag they pass out as soon as they leave the docks.

The Seaplane has been running a $119 RT special, certain times and days, booked online. Also, on weekends and off season, they have offered a $55 one way walk -up rate. But, you take a chance or no seat if you don't make a reservation. We have had particularly rough seas recently, so the ferry would be very uncomfortable, plus it doesn't always run on schedule. The only reason I would ever take the ferry is if I were transporting something too bulky for the seaplane.

LOL, I've taken the ferry but I don't get sea sick so it wasn't a problem for me. Saying that, I prefer the sea plane because the trip is much shorter. I did meet a man once from STX that said he commuted to STT. He worked the Boy Scouts.
