Transferring a TEXAS to VI Driver’s License process inquiry..
Looking for anyone that has experienced getting a VI license when moving from TEXAS. Any government process is dynamic so first off, I’m curious, is the below still accurate?
“Transferring a U.S. Driver’s License
To obtain a VI driver’s license you must completely fill out the Bureau of Motor Vehicles License Transfer form. A valid, unexpired driver’s license from the U.S. (or a U.S. jurisdiction) must be surrendered when you apply for your VI driver’s license, and you must provide a copy of your official driving record from the previous state. You must also provide one valid document verifying your identity and legal status in the U.S., two documents proving your residential address, and a Social Security card or approved alternate. (A list of documents accepted by the BMV is included below for your reference, but please confirm the most currently list by checking with the BMV.) Once all of your documents have been submitted and verified, and you have paid all of the fees imposed
by the BMV, a VI driver’s license will then be issued.”
Secondly, all of this seems more than reasonable to me. However, what caught my eye was the "official driving record from previous state". I have no problem with the concept of providing this. In saying that, the state of Texas has several options when ordering a driving record. Which “type” is necessary (see list below)?
Type 1
Status record
Date of birth, license status, home address and original Texas driver license application date.
Type 2
3-year history
Type 1 information, plus
List of crashes (if a ticket was received), and all moving and nonmoving violations for three years from date of offense.
Type 2A
Certified 3-year history
Certified version of type 2.
This record type cannot be used for a defensive driving course (DDC).
Type 3
List of all crashes and violations
Type 1 information, plus
List of all crashes (even if no ticket was received), and all moving and nonmoving violations in the record.
Type 3 is provided only to the person the record belongs to.
This record type cannot be used for a defensive driving course (DDC).
Type 3A
Certified list of all crashes and violations
Certified version of type 3.
Type 3A is provided only to the person the record belongs to.
This is the only record type that can be used for a defensive driving course (DDC).
Type AR
Certified abstract of complete driver record
Type 3 information, plus
All suspensions in the record.
Type AR contains all information in a driver record.
ALSO, where [on-line] can I get the "Bureau of Motor Vehicles License Transfer form" ahead of time? I may be assuming to much there but thought I would ask.. lol
Thank you in advance!
As is usual, the dmv gov. website seems to be down.
You can call and ask for Mr. Olive, pronounced Oleave, and can give you necessary information.
Here's a link I came across for another poster.

I doubt BMV will know all the TX driving records, so I would get the easiest one to get and submit it like it was the only one available. The most important thing is greeting "good morning", etc, and just go with the flow.
We moved here from Texas but it was in 2002 when the rules were a bit different. Alanna33 has some good suggestions as she always does.
The most ridiculous part of getting the license was obtaining the driver's license handbook. They of course didn't have a good supply so we waited until someone turned their's in.
Then the challenge became selecting the best answer to questions that were written by some illiterate bureaucrat! You'll probably do fine but if not, just repeat the stupidity and tell us how it goes!
You don't need to take the written or the driving test as long as you have a valid license. I would bet that Type 1 is all you are going to need for your Texas driving record. The hardest part for me was finding two documents with my physical address on it. On St. John, physical addresses are pretty much useless.
STXbob posted with the application awhile back, see this post: Driver's License
Everyone writes that they had to get a copy of their state driving record. I don't know what happened to me, I didn't. No one asked me. I turned in my old one, filled out some paperwork, paid my fees, got my mugshot taken 😀
and I had my driver's license. Done deal.
i did not need a copy of driving record from previous state nor did i need to take a written or driving test
you do need a lot of new forms of id and other odds and ends that you didnt need before.
But how long ago did you get your driver's licenses? Rules change over time and the instructions do now say that a state record is a requirement.
I finally turned my Arkansas lisense in November. Did not have to provide driving record from Arkansas. But, when we moved back here over 3 years ago, we did have to have the former state's driving record to insure our vehicles. So I'd order it anyway.
My hardest was providing two things with my physical address on them. Even at that, they still got my birth year off by 20 years.
2013 is when i got mine.
Even at that, they still got my birth year off by 20 years.
Was that good or bad? 😀
I simply got all the required forms and got it done. Was pretty straight forward and easy.
California only had one option for driving record. Again getting two pieces with a physical address was the challenge!
Awesome! Thanks to all.. (tu)8-)
Personally, I'd get a duplicate license in Texas and relinquish one when you get a VI License.
