Transfering Title, Registering Car?

I did a search on the board but my question wasn't really answered. I recently bought a car in STT but I am still out in the states. The owner transfered the title to me, had it notarized and I am having a friend hold the car for me in STT. I have two questions

1) Upon my arrival what is the process to go and have the car registered in my name and how long should I expect it to take as in more than a day's visit?

2) Do I need car insurance right now on the car even though it will not be driven until I arrive on the island or can I wait?

Thanks in advance for any responses. This board has been a life saver!

Hello Victoria,

Its been a long time since I went throught the process, so I would suggest you call DMV and check.

Your car needs to be insured if it’s going to be on the road. Is your friend going to be driving it at all? Or is it going to remain parked in a private lot?

What is the expiration on the registration? Is it going to still be current when you get to St. Thomas? If not, then you will need to get a moving permit to move the car from where it is to DMV to be inspected and registered.

If the registration is current then you go down to DMV with your car, the signed/notarized title, proof of insurance & driver's license and fill out some paperwork, pay some fees and get a new title/registration with your information on it. Like I said, its been a while so I don't remember the process in detail.

How long the process might take... well I have gone in and out in 30 minutes and I've also spent hours there. Most would bet on it taking hours.

DMV on St. Thomas is (340)774-5765, give them a call.

An excellent service on St. Thomas is "I'll Do It For You Too" 340-775-0635, They handle business licenses and registering of motor vehicles amongst other things and I've used them to register my car for many years now with no problems whatsoever. The fee for this service is well worth it to me in avoiding the sometimes interminable wait in line at DMV. Oh, I should mention too that apart from doing the annual registration, they have also been quickly able to take care of transferring titles, etc. And, if you don't have the title to the car, they can get that for you too. It wasn't always necessary to have the title to register the car but this new (money-making!) additon came up in the last year or so!

You DO need to have insurance on the vehicle before it can be registered. I have dealt for years with Theodore Tunick and Company on St Thomas - 340-776-7000 - they're a well-established and reputable insurance company and their rates are very reasonable.

Hope this helps.
