Traffic laws books

With a little more than I month before my stateside license expires, I decided to submit to bureaucracy and get a VI driver's license. Today I went to the STT MVB and bought my doctor's form. Now I just need to find a doctor to fill it out for me and pass the written test.

The STT employees told me they are out of the books that define traffic laws, that the written test is culled from. They shrugged and said that if I am already driving, I should pass. I have heard from others who have relocated here that this in not necessarily the case. (One woman told me she failed it so badly so many times, the examiners wanted to know if she needed a translator.) I called driving schools to see if any of them have any spare copies. They don't. I called the STJ Motor Vehicle Bureau to see if they have any books available, and they said they can only give me a book if I apply for a license on STJ. Now I know that you can only get driver's licenses or register your car on the island that you live on, and I asked him if I could get a note or something from the St. Thomas office that said I am involved in the process and they are out of books. He said that it is not his problem that I don't live on STJ, and absolutely not.

Anyone have any idea where I can get the little book on VI traffic laws? All I want to do is read a copy (or even an online reference).

Ha, ha! Welcome to the Virgin Islands, Scarlet! I have an old manual, although I doubt it has been updated.I think there are some folks who have taken the test recently... E-mail me and I will get a copy of it to you if you want. I agree that you should study. The questions are not hard, but some are written in rather confusing language. I believe that the test is still true/false, but the manual gives you open-ended questions such as: "What does a STOP sign mean?" and "Under what circumstances may you pass another vehicle on the right hand side?" It also gives helpful location information such as "Bolongo Bay Resort is at Oblongo Bay." Do you have your appointment date to take the test? A month is kind of cutting it close... You do not want to take the road test.
