Toll Free Numbers Blocked
I can no longer make toll-free calls from STX. I've tried calling several different toll-free numbers (customer service of two different credit card companies, Lowe's customer service, and my MCI calling card), from two different phone lines. The calls always disconnect 5 to 10 seconds after connecting. Does anybody have a similar experience?
Innovative says Sprint is blocking more of these outgoing toll-free calls. If so, I would expect them to block the calls from the start, not 5 to 10 seconds after connecting.
I've always found it hit or miss with toll-free numbers. Several years ago I asked someone about this (don't recall if it was Innovative or AT&T). I don't recall the details, but apparently when purchasing a toll-free phone number, you have options as to scope of coverage. Some companies elect not to pay for coverage in our area.
It's a PITA when an online company *only* has a toll-free number that can't be dialed from here. Many times I've emailed a given company asking for a non-toll-free alternate. I've come across a few companies who have no alternate number. Bummer.
You can use Skype to call toll-free numbers that cannot otherwise be reached down here. And it's free.
I have the same problem with a bank in California. I used to be able to dial them, then they narrowed their coverage area. Now I cannot dial them on the land-line or cell phone, but Skype works great.
This problem is mostly corrected now. I can now make all the calls that I was previously able to. It was an issue with our long distance carrier Sprint. They had a problem with a cable or something in Puerto Rico. Service slowly improved starting about 2 weeks ago, and now I almost always stay connected with long distance calls, whether or not it's toll-free, incoming, or outgoing.
call collect and see what happens!
My bank and credit card companies will accept collect call if the 800 service doesn't connect.
