To move to STT or not to move?

Hello everyone, new girl here! I just got back from St Thomas a few days ago and have been obsessed with moving there ever since. I do have a few questions so if anyone could help that would be spectacular!

First of all, how long should my PMV be? Could the six day trip I just took be considered my PMV? I mostly laid on different beaches so I imagine not but... Where should you stay for this PMV (needs to be cheap!) I've read about villa fairview, any others? Couldn't you just move up there and have your first month be your PMV?

Secondly, I can't decide what to do about my car. I live in Nevada, so if I wanted to bring it, I would have to drive to Florida and have it shipped from there! That sucks huh? Any ideas on how much shipping might be from Florida?

I am a server so I would definitely get a job at a popular restaurant/ bar. Serving in Nevada, I make about 100 a night. Any ideas on what servers make in STT? What is going on with the health card? Why do u need to take a stool test?

Wow, I just browsed over my thing and I have a lot of question marks! Sorry, I will stop bombarding with questions-I am just an inquisitive person!! 🙂

Thanks for your help!

Dear Gracie,

I'll take the ickiest question. Obtaining a health card includes a stool test because this is the tropics and parasites are a problem. Food handlers must be free of them, hence the stool test.

As for the rest of your questions, Go to the top of the board and read the frequently asked questions and the moving stories (what to expect). Many of your questions will be answered.

Good luck.

Hi Linda! Thanks for responding!

Yeah, I have been doing a lot more reading on this forum and the stories. It is really informative and I'm really glad I found this website-you guys are all really nice and helpful! 🙂

Anyways, I plan on moving up around Dec or Jan. Since that is into the tourist season a little bit, do you think I'll have trouble finding a place and a job?

Thanks, again!

Thx barbie!

Where do they ship out of? What kind of fees you have to pay once you get the car on island?

We shipped a 2004 Jeep Liberty to STT in 2005 and we used Lee at Managed Freight (fabulous) so we wouldn't have to deal with registering it in STT as he takes care of it all. Here is the cost breakdown (in 2005)

West Palm Beach to STT $1045.00

Personal Use Tax (value of vehicle x 4%) $780.00

Road Tax (weight of vehicle x .16) $528.00

Managed Freight processing fee $330.00

DMV licensing and registration fee $110.00

GR Tax $69.00

TOTAL COST.........$2862

We drove to West Palm ourselves and delivered it to Tropical Shipping.

Hope this helps

Pia

Pia-

Awesome, thank you so much!:)

One question, what is the GR tax? It's not much but I'm just curious. Your info is really helpful-thx! Actually, one more question, how hard has the island been on your jeep? Anyone else have input on how the tough the island is on cars? I know it's rough but is it really bad?

Thx again and in advance!
