TO bring a car or not to bring/ STT

My hubby and I have gone round and round about this subject. What dealerships are on STT? Is it possible to buy a good used car for under $6000..I mean one that will run for a year or 2. Are there plenty of used cars around? Is there really any other option than buying if we plan to be there at least 6 months or possibly the year. Coming in Jan. What do you folks think? Leasing per month looks to be $700/mo. Ugh. Appreciative of any thoughts.

Yes, it is possible to buy a good used car here for under $6000, there are there plenty of used cars around, and buying a used car here makes more sense than bringing yours, especially since you aren't looking at the move as a permanent relocation.

I agree. If you have a really reliable car that's paid for & were planning a PERMANENT move, I'd say bring it but in your case, just have any used car checked out by a good mechanic when you find one here. There are dealers for most normal brands of cars. People leave island a lot & sell their vehicles so check Island Trader but do have any looked over by a good mechanic.

On the same topic - can any1 recommend a mechanic on STT? Someone who can take a look at a car before buying (but also someone to go to in general)?

Mr. Greaux on the north side is great. I'll have to get his phone number.

Sorry, I got my Frenchie names mixed up. It's Mr. Querrard - 775-1453.

On the same topic - are there/what are better used car dealers on STT (if there is such a thing at all)? I.e. where am I most likely to find a decent transportation, assuming I am not too picky about options? 🙂

Try Lennard - he's in the book.

Thanks though I can't seem to find Lennard listed. Is this a person's name or a business?

We use Sibilly's Auto Repair near Franks Lock and Key in Charlotte Amalie. They were recommended by locals and have BEEN THE BEST.

We purchased from Community Motors in Tutu. They were OK but no great shakes, altho' the car we have is great.

MartyonSTT posts here and we have been very happy with his work, and his rate (tu) he will come to your house or work to work on the car. Hell, he fixed my daughters muffler in the partking lot of Duffy's while she was working!

Continuing the topic somewhat - any recommendations on a tire place? Just bought a car and it needs two new tires (one looks so smooth and shiny you can see yourself in it), so I'd like to get them replaced ASAP. This is for STT.

Rodriguez Auto parts in TuTu - is always my 1st choice - I have used the Tire Kingdom and they were good and service oriented but the tires didn't last.

If you're approaching Tutu Park from the west, where Cost-u-Less is, just before the light to turn into Tutu, there's a filling station. Turn left there & it's behind the station on the left side.

May be you guys can solve another question for me? 🙂
Do you know of any stateside online auto parts websites that will ship here (using USPS)?

I have found some over the years but always called and did the whole thing over the phone so all would be clear between us - priority mail - worked fine for taillights, filters, carb parts. I have also had luck using Murphys Auto parts for USA deliveries. They are down by the airport past Community Motors.

Carb parts?
I`m not a auto mechanic, but I haven't seen one (on a car)since 1998.
I think throttle body injection started around 1987, & everything (as i know it) was fuel injected by 1995.

I`m a old timer, i`ve rebuilt MANY carbs!
You can still find them on old 2 stroke outboards & scooters/motorcycles.

Well, all those places I find on the web are not set up to ship here (other than as "international" at appropriately high prices), and there isn't anyone to talk to. So if you have a specific name of a parts dealer stateside (in particular for Dodge/Jeep) that'd be great!
