Best tip you will get is to read the board as far back as you can and use to search feature to search for specific questions. Tons of information...even for traveling nurses as many traveling nurses have come here to ask questions.

fam5: You might want to check the website for Schneider Regional: http://www.rlshospital.org/ on St Thomas. I believe that travelers are limited to 6 mo max contract, then you are expected to sign on as permanent staff.

For elementary schools, look at Montessori or Antilles.

Fam 5, from your reading, I am sure that you will have registered that the consensus of opinion is that families with young children are possibly not the best candidates for a successful relo. to the Islands. Please read the threads on children families etc.
Have you ever been to the VI?
Private schools are probably the best option, but can be quite spendy. It might be better to wait until the little chickies are on their way out of the rice bowl and you can be more flexible in your needs etc.

Hello "New & Improved Jane", Yes, after doing a lot of reading it appears that moving with children (10, 5 & 3) would be difficult. We are still optimistic and will continue to explore the options but are in no hurry to jump in blind. We have been to the Islands before, I spent quite a bit of time in the USVI and BVI but of course a visit is not the same as living/working in a new location. We are planning on coming out for a pmv to look at things first hand.
I believe the private schools would be a must and as you say that is $$$$ but would believe it would be worth the cost based on the posts we have read.
Thanks to everyone on this board who share their honest opinions and offer constructive input.

My daughter went to Montessori through the 6th grade and I was happy with it. I have friends whose children go to All Saints and speak highly of it. It is much less costly than Montessori or Antilles.

Glynnswife,
How long have you been in the VI? Is there a waiting list for All Saints school? We keep oscillating between the Outer Banks NC or making the move to VI. My wife, as an RN, can get work either place on a travel assignment for short term (6-12mo) so we have an out if things don't go as desired. We are looking to come out in July/August for a couple weeks to look around.
Thanks,
Fam5

fam5,
We too made a choice between outerbanks NC and St Croix. We chose St Croix. I don't know if you have been to the Outer Banks but we love it there. If we ever move back to the states that will probably be where we will go or someplace close. I don't know if expense is an issue but it would be a lot cheaper and easier to move to the Outer Banks. The schools are pretty good, the people friendly and depending where on the Outer Banks you would live, a lot of the towns are just as slow and laid back as STX. Hope this helps.

Hello fam5,

For elementary school on STT you might also want to check out Sts. Peter & Paul. You mentioned planning a PMV for July/August. If you want to check out the schools then you may want to go with mid or late August; its around then that the school year usually gets started after summer break. You can check with the schools you are interested in to find out exactly when they start. Actually some of them may be open for visits in July if they are having a summer camp or summer school, so again check with the schools.

There is a board user name Sidnie that has worked at both the STT hospital and the STX hospital on travel nurse work. If you have some specific questions about the hospital perhaps you might start a new thread with Nursing Q's - Attn. Sidnie or something like that in the subject.

My mom is a traveling nurse and I am trying to get her to come down in Nov. Any info others can provide would be very helpful. In the meantime, I'll do a search. Trying to get her as much info as possible and encourage her to come down on a 3 month adventure!

Thanks,
Jen
