Three 24-year-olds moving to USVI
The economy does not have to be crap...people just need to be prepared for the jobs that are going to become available...case in point, I placed an ad in The Avis, Daily News, Dept. of Labor, and two forums on this very same board looking for several software developers.
There have been NO responses to the messages placed on this board, and only THREE from the ads placed in the other media.
Native Son, I sent you a PM with regards to that so there is +1 message from the boards 😉
Sorry don't mean to threadjack
Because you are requiring some pretty specific software knowledge. You'll find someone. Too bad, I knew someone who lived on island and just moved to Silicon Valley to do that kind of work. Are you also in STX?

Yes, STX...I guess you need pretty specific knowledge for most jobs except VI Senator 😀
Sorry...couldn't resist...

Actually, there are a few specific ones:
Singing is one of them.. ie - Senator "Positive" Nelson..
Absolute disregard for the use of common sense is the most important one...
Sorry, I couldn't resist either...& sorry for the momentary thread hijacking..
Aren't the people electing them? Just sayin.
Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels that allow a few weeks/month stays to see if we would like it there before deciding to move or just to be able to find a good apartment location?

Which island?
St Croix
West side - Cottages by the Sea. North Shore - Waves of Cane Bay. Either might give you a weekly/monthly rate.
St. Croix is a special place. I love the people, island and even all its craziness and will be back soon. I intend to still be part of the community and help it grow, but right now things are hard for everybody. These young men should come down, do the adventure of their dreams, but do it with as much information as possible. They should be aware of the wonderful things about it, but also the pitfalls to be well informed. Reading the St. Croix Avis every day will give you insight into the crime, yes, patrons were pistol-whipped at a restaurant on the West End, and one was burned to the ground last year. Murders are not only drug and gang related, most and many, true, but has the murder of Vi Historian Robert Johnson ever been solved? http://virginislandsdailynews.com/news/v-i-historian-murdered-in-east-end-home-1.1259684. How about this year's murder of the son of a well-known artist? Was his murder solved? Did they ever reveal the recent cause of death of the Calypso musician and his adopted son? There was a home invasion in Beeston Hill this spring in which cops shot the two young men dead on the driveway after they held up the couple inside for hours. The wife was able to call 911 when she heard noises before the event and left her cell phone on during the entire assault for the cops to hear. These all were not gang murders and they didn't happen 10 years ago. Despite all that, I did feel safe in St. Croix. I had bars on my windows and four dogs, didn't live in an exclusive wealthy area (targets in my opinion) and I had other people living on the property with me. On the wonderful side of St. Croix, I love the art scene, the nature, the farmers, the food, Taste of St. Croix, the great restaurants, the nature, the nature, the nature, the ocean the ocean, the Caribbean, wonderful Crucian friends. I love the tourists, culture, music, vegans, beaches, sea turtles, Botanical Gardens and all the other splendid things that make St. Croix beautiful. I love its small town feel. Everybody knows everybody. It's undeveloped and down to earth. Hopefully that Punch and Williams elitist/yacht harbor/hotel/casino nightmare won't happen on Rainbow Beach. Best of all the American culture and mayhem is much farther away!
These young men also wrote that they wanted to get away from the dreadful dull architecture and over-consumptive lifestyle of Kansas (and most of America really these days), St. Croix certainly offers that, but the truth is that unless they have serious cash they will not be able to afford Food Town or Schooner Bay and will have to do their shopping at Cost-U-Less and K-mart big box dullness. St. Croix is beautiful to get away from that American ugliness mostly but it does have it's rundown parts of blighted concrete strip malls that are American. Many people will say, even locals, that the US ruined the Virgin Islands, compared to other islands in the region. I definitely agree they should watch out for the alcohol and drugs, I have never met a handyman on St. Croix in the 2 1/2 years I lived there that didn't smell of alcohol. People wandering around with open containers is a nuisance. Luckily there as some splendid Alcholic Anonymous and other groups going on, as well as the wonderful work the Women's Coalition and VI Humane Learning Center do for the island. The young men should by all means come. St. Croix needs good people to help it rise up from the ashes of Hovensa. It has so much potential and is in my opinion one of the most amazing places in the world. I wish them all the luck in the world. I hope they find jobs and that their dreams come true on St. Croix.hey just need to be informed of the truth, as much of this post started out with too much paradise and not enough of that other side of duality, the dark side. They should be prepared and have a back up plan. And they should enjoy the heck out of themselves.
Chajta, try the Pink Fancy downtown. You want need a car there. Rooms with kitchenettes, one the street (not recommended) or poolside in charming old world courtyard. Several nice young people live there and work downtown where there is some nightlife. I'm an old lady, but, if I were younger, I'd do the same. Welcome to the big island!
Saw this listing on Craig's List and sounds great for you guys! Great location, too, if you only have one car to share. At this location you can walk to two banks, large grocery, pizza, chicken, burgers and truly easy walking distance to Christiansted boardwalk where much goes on for young people as yourselves! Hope to see you three at happy hour sometime soon! Come on down and join the fun!
Dumb me, I forgot new listing on CL. http://virgin.craigslist.org/apa/3988664006.html
Just updating everyone on our progress. We have tickets for the 10th of September (coming up very soon!). We will be staying on St. Thomas for 7 days while we figure out what we will be doing for our long term plans. I appreciate everyone's input so so much. The positive and the negative aspects of the islands are equally important in my opinion and we aren't going into this experience with rose colored glasses. Thank you again for taking time out of your day to post and give us tips. I'll post again once we get down to the islands with an update on how we're doing!
One thing that did strike me when I saw the STX listing which was linked is that it has A/C and also an electric stove so it's wise to ask what the average electricity consumption is if your rent doesn't include it (which most don't). Personally I can't stand electric stoves but certainly here you're much better off with a gas stove as they run less expensively and, if the power goes out, you can still cook with gas! A rental at a higher altitude where you get good cooling breezes without having to use A/C and having a gas stove can save you a lot on your monthly expenses.
In which part of STT are you going to be staying?
So whats the latest? No updates in a while?
I am a 25 year old Iowan, and recently two of my friends moved to STX. We found a nice 3bed/2bath for 1100. I think that if we can do it, you can do it!
So whats the latest? No updates in a while?
Well they've already come and gone so maybe they came, saw and didn't conquer after all ...

That wouldn't be unusual (!) but I see I did misread the last post of September 1st which said, "Just updating everyone on our progress. We have tickets for the 10th of September (coming up very soon!). We will be staying on St. Thomas for 7 days while we figure out what we will be doing for our long term plans" and forgot this wasn't a PMV but a cold turkey drop!
I believe they are on STT now look around. I doubt this board is what they want to be doing during the day lol. Nice dude, hope they like it, there's a ton of rentals on NS lately, I'm sure some great deals. I contemplated moving (still on NS) but I just can't give up all my fruit trees and the breezes here.
