Thinking of Moving to UVI
I am 21 years old and have been living on a small island off the coast of Georgia for the last ten years. I am researching a move to one of the islands but am not sure which one I would like better. I have a few years expierience as a waitress and was also a graphic/web designer for 4 1/2 years. I love different cultures and the island lifestyle.
Curious as to which island it is easier to find affordable accomodations and a job that can pay the rent and keep you fed.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I have read over lots of previous posts on this board already.
Also - how is the social circle for 20 something's? Are there alot of people from the mainland now living over there?
there are lots of twenties people from stateside on STJ
Hello,
Well I would suggest you do as much research that you can so you can narrow an island down. Perhaps read through the online information on this web site for both moving and travel... and get a Settlers Handbook from http://www.vitraders.com so you can read about living here and moving here.
Waitress work you will find. Web design.... if you do it freelance, perhaps your own little business; several people do that already - so you would need to see how much need there is it for another.
Well all three islands have folks living there succesfully so I suppose any of the three would do. All have tourism trade so a restaurant job could be found. You would need to see which one's atmosphere best suits what you are looking for. So perhaps if you described that we could better say which island matches you.
There are quite a number of US transplants here, on each of islands, both young and not young :-).
Breifly... St. John is smaller, much more laid back, fewer places to work and live because it is smaller - but that is its charm. St. Thomas is busier, larger population, lots of larger stores (K-mart, larger grocery stores, lots of stores in town, restaurants, cars, people)... And St. Croix is smaller in terms of tourism but in terms of atmosphere really offers both the laid back and the more busy feel. St. Thomas has a busier night life if that is imporatant to you. St. Croix and St. Thomas have universities so there are quite a number of college age kids there, and also as a note lots of older folks attending university as well. Not really a party college though.

A note to add about ST John, jobs are easy to find because good employees are in short supply. The biggest obsticle is finding a place to stay. I think there are a decent amount of open places to rent this year as opposed to last year. There is no place like St.John in the world. I have never heard of someone who didnt like living or staying on STJ. Of course, people move away but there is always a piece of them that belongs to St.John.
