Thinking of moving to St. John

Hello! I just discovered St. John! Well I've been doing research on moving to each of the three islands and have been here on this board asking so many questions, thanks so much for all of everyone's advice! But now my boyfriend and i are really interested in St. John, it really sounds like what we are looking for. Quiet and safe, beautiful beaches and no traffic! I understand the majority of the islands is a natural reserve with archealogical sites, that sounds just like what we want... to get lost on an island in the caribbean. we are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of southern california, we don't want any traffic or big cities. we just want a small village and a lot of beautiful scenery.

So basically why i'm posting this, is to hear what everyone thinks.. like why did you choose to live here and why not? what are some good rental agency recommendations for long term rentals, because i know it's hard to find a place there. also i have a small dog, anyone know how they feel about dogs on st. john? what about cars, are they needed? and what is the best time to job search?

I could really use some personal opinions from anyone who knows this island well. like also what are the major disadvantages? Well thanks so much everyone!

Hi!
My husband and I are arriving on STJ at the end of this month.....YIKES!! We actually have been researching and saving for almost a year. We got married in October and decided to do our scouting trip/ honeymoon then. At the time, we thought about moving in Jan or Feb of 2004, but quickly changed our minds when we realized just how much planning was involved....oh yeah, and $$$!! St.John is extraordinary!! We stayed for 10 days and didn't want to leave. Now, here we are, 4 weeks out from our move, almost a year later, and I still have questions myself.

As far as rental agencies, (on StJ) there's ONE.....Scenic Properties. We've been talking to them for 8 months, and we're no closer to getting an apartment today than we were when we first started our planning. It can get VERY discouraging, but we're still on the way. The online newpapers have many listing for ST.Thomas, but I've never seen one for STJ. Housing is difficult to find for locals, much less, people like us who are thousands of miles away. So we'll stay at The Inn at Tamarind Court when we arrive so we can look for housing on the message boards in town.

When were y'all thinking of moving? From what I've been told, the best time to find housing is August-Sept., & early Oct. Our plan B is to live on STT for a little while if we can't find anything on STJ right away. I think a lot of people commute from one to the other everyday.

I'm no expert, but I hope that some of what I told you helps.
Good luck on your plans and don't get discouraged!! Take care!

Amanda

st john is awesome. my sister has lived on island for 15 years.

the inn at tamarind court isn't a bad option for a while but it will add up. $$ you will want to have a car. especially if you end up with a rental out of town. which is likely. how old are you? that will factor in to where you want to live. young & crazy, in town no problem. a little older you might want to live a little bit out of town. my sister lived all over until she bought her house in chocolate hole. be patient & look hard & you'll find a place.

don't forget to start all your conversations with good morning/afternoon/evening. this alone will take you far.
